Starting an outdoor wood-lovers patch. *UPDATE*
    #19245371 - 12/08/13 02:44 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So I want to try my hand at cultivating outdoor wood-loving species. Specifically Psilocybe cyanescens and King Stropharia. In my family's yard there is a large spruce tree housing a fair amount of brush and debris that my father wants to get rid of. With hidden intentions, I suggested that we use wood chips to control the undergrowth. Now, there is plenty of ground cover provided by fallen/dead spruce and no reason that we should actually lay down wood chips upon the natural mulch  but my father really liked the idea and it seems that I'll have a seemingly unlimited supply of wood chips come next spring. I will be using these wood chips as substrate, of course.

The spruce tree borders a south facing wooden fence that effectively shades the area from the sun for almost the whole day. Combined with the shade provided by the spruce, It seems like the perfect micro climate for growing mushrooms.

There are a few components to this plan that I dont have worked out yet and I am fairly inexperienced with mushroom cultivation, so obviously I dont expect an incredible yield but I do want to try my best.

First of all, Is the environment under the spruce tree too acidic to support growth?

Also, There is a fair amount of mycological activity under the tree and we also used to keep dry firewood stacked there but it has now turned to a pile of fungal substrate. After clearing out the area should I protect the colonizing chips with a layer of tarp between them and the ground?

What is the chance that I can keep these beds fruiting each season/what do I need to do to make that possible?

I would like to keep the bulk of the cyan substrate below ground as to not raise awareness of the patch, will this stifle growth?

I nocced up 4 quarts of grain with cyan spores 1 month ago and I assumed them to be contaminated since then cause I thought they smelled funny. I bunched the bags with a pile of other contaminated spawn and before throwing it all out I gave each bag a second sniff. 3 bags out of the bunch seemed to actually be alright/questionable and one of them actually smells nice and shroomey. Is there any way to tell if these are the cyan bags rather than the cubes I had them bunched with?

Sorry for the noob questions and for writing more than was necessary, I am trying a new amphetamine prescription and I guess its pretty effective.

Under the spruce is fine, you could use spruce chips if you wanted.

If there is mushrooms there already, its a good spot for fungal growth. There will always be invaders. The ones under the spruce are probably mostly mychorizial and of no competiton anyways.

By feeding the patch fresh chips every spring it could last and grow huge forever.

You cant just keep cyan substrate underground. It will be all over and indistinguishable from wine cap myc.

Put spores on agar if  you really wanna get it done.

And I think SRA is more vigorous then cyan and will be the biggest competition for the cyans. Id keep em seperate at first and then let them mix natutally.

UPDATE

So I just completed a large bed of chips mixed with dirt, mulch, and hay. I was planning on putting all of my cyan spawn there, however the chips that I got delivered were from a tree service company and I had no control over what I got.

It turned out that a fair bunch of the chips were cedar and spruce. Perhaps some cherry as well. Anyway, the bed is complete and I plan to stack  my shiitake logs on the bed but the chips are not an optimal substrate for cyans.

What should I do? Should I grow another variety of mushroom there and do the cyans in another location? I would prefer that the cyans go in the bed but its fine if they dont. I could supplement the bed with hardwood sawdust but that has to be a waste. What varieties of mushrooms would be suitable for the new bed?

Sorry if I'm rambling, I'm tired. Here are some pics:

The bed is much larger than shown in the picture. I took it when I started piling it up.

And of course the cyan spawn was fine, as you can see.

Well fuck. After asking around and doing research it looks like I just made more work for myself.  The softwood is useless and will needed to be used for its original intention. I will be either chipping myself some hardwood or searching around at some local businesses.

I did not expect a load of softwood and I took my chances.

I live in a very deciduous region and managed to get a load of multiple softwoods. FML.
