Overlay?
    #1967698 - 09/30/03 11:17 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

A foaf who has a 12 day old casing with no signs of pinning ,"thinks", he is starting to see some signs of overlay. How long should one wait until considering deep scratching? I hate to do it considering i could kill some unvisible pins. What to do?

You could let it go through its first flush then deep scratch and re-case for the second flush, I guess it depends on how bad it is. You might still get a decent amount of shroomies from it. I'd say wait a few more days, if no pins appear then maybe do something about it.

In response to the above question, could someone also define what overlay is in relation to mushrooms cultivation?

Check the FAQ's. It's in the casing section.

Overlay is a term that refers to the condition which can occur to an overly colonized casing layer. Overlay occurs when the fine strands of mycelia die and become hard and matted ,as compared to the light strandy healthy mycelia.

If it is overlay, its not bad yet but damn i've done everything i know to initiate pinning. Maybe i'm just over anxious but its almost at the 2 week mark.

I'm not positive its overlay. I've never really had this problem before. There are a few thick patches of colonized casing, resembling some overlay pics i've seen. The casing is in a rubbermaid terrarium...Hum.-90% unless getting fresh air, then it drops to about 80%, Temp. - appx. 75, Light - appx. 13hrs./day flourescent grow light. ?

you need HIGH humidity for the pinning stage... the drop in humidity is not that important

keep patch casing if you are worried about overlay
take some verm straight from the bag and sprinkel it onto the casing, then lightly mist it
dont over do the verm, just a light sprinkle on the mycellum... it will provide the moisture it needs and prevent it from overlaying..

ive noticed in about 99% of the cases where i thought a casing was gonna overlay that knots formed just in the knick of time.
