Some trouble's...
    #1966215 - 09/30/03 03:42 PM (14 years, 20 days ago)

Okay here's the deal...

My buddy has a desktop with two HD's...up until yesterday he had no virus software, so i install NAV and found like 87 viruses, so we cleaned them up...and shit started going wrong...turn's out one of the hd's has been wiped cleaned...

I unhooked the working one and booted the fukt one, and i got a screen saying " No media on hd" or "no OS" i can't remeber which one...

So my question is..What do i do? can i make a boot disk from the working HD, unhook the working one, and boot the fukt one with the boot disk and go from there?

With the level of corruption that you are seeing (87 viruses), I wouldn't bother trying to salvage the system.  A complete reinstall is called for in this case.  There is no telling what else is on his machine that your AV software didn't find.

I wouldn't make any bootable removable media on his machine.  If you need a boot floppy for the OS, create it on a different machine and flip the write protect tab before sticking it into your friends machine.

If you want to get the second disk working, you probably need to rewrite the MBR and format the disk.  If you are pre-winxp, to recreate an MBR you can run "fdisk /mbr" from the command line.  For winxp you must boot into the recovery console and run fixmbr (or something close to that, type help from the console).

... or just install one of the free unix flavors (linux, openbsd, etc) and don't worry about virus attacks.

I do want to get the non-working HD working again....

Can you tell me or point me in the direction of learning how to boot into the recovery console? It would be hugely greatly appreciated...(he's running XP)

Boot from the winxp cdrom, and when it prompts, hit R for recovery console.  It may not have been installed, but is by default on most systems.  There are two places you can hit 'R' in winxp, and I think you want the second... the text that it displays will let you know... if it doesn't say something about the recovery console, then you want the next one.

After the console starts up, you will be at a limited "dos like" prompt.  From there type 'help' and you will get a list of commands that you can use.  Fixboot, fixmbr, and chkdsk are the commands you are most interested in.

Does the machine boot at all?

you know what...he doesnt have a winxp disc...

it doesnt boot to say dos, or the prompt where i can so safe mode styles or anything... it loads up, then it's almost like it hangs up..says something about a configuration file, then takes me to this screen and it's like a B&W ascii drawing and there's arrows pointing to a F1 key..there's a message about no OS or no media, i can't forget as it was late last night....

No, you just need one HDD to have an OS in order for this to work. Oh and don't put them on the same IDE channel. Bandwidth problems and data corruption will occur.
