does anyone know the best way to get these guys out of the ground? i saw some today in the forest and they were so big i thought they were volleyballs from a distance. my guess is that i'd have to do a lot of digging as to not injure it in anyway. the bottom surface touches the ground. does anyone know how long it takes for them to get that big? i wish i dug them out now. they looked very tasty.

Oh yea, the younger is the better. Do not eat specimens that are sporulating (white throughout the fruitbody).

I don't have my musrhoom books handy but I THINK that they are edible when they ARE fully solid white throughout, as opposed to darkening as they will when they are preparing to spread spores.
They shouldn't make you sick at all, they are listed as edible in all pub's I have seen. Check to be sure on the sporulating though. I'd at least drop by a book store and check out the section on giant puff balls (if you don't have a book and/or don't want to buy one) to be sure.
Never seen one before - not sure if they grow around here (Portland OR).

Ah yes, I was unclear. A young fruitbody will be white throughout the fruitbody.
