Fruiting in the same jars that grain is colonized in.
    #1964489 - 09/30/03 12:50 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

My foaf has an idea for a very simple grow. It would be more convenient if he did not have a fruiting chamber, for stealth reasons (his rooommates). If quart jars are used and only filled half way with substrate, would the mushrooms grow in the upper part of the jar?

The plan is to use popcorn, soaked in water for 4 days and then pasteurized with the fractional sterilization method described here. The jars would then be innoculated with Koh Sumai from a karo tek jar, and allowed to colonize.

After the jars are colonized, would it be a good idea to add a casing layer on top of the colonized corn? Will humidifying the jars be a problem?

Please post any potential problems you see with this method.

i thought soaking for more than 24 hours would fuck it up. the shrooms wont grow just on top unless you tape the lower half and induce light through top. i dont think you really need a casing layer but it wouldnt hurt to do so. so yes, it will work fine.

If you try to fruit that jar even with a casing layer, you'll prolly end up with some very small shrooms. Popcorn is poor substrate to grow shrooms on, instead it is more useful to inoculate horse/straw spawn with. If you still really wanted to do it though, i suggest you add a quarter inch casing layer and black out the sides of the exposed corn/casing layer with duct tape. You will then have shrooms that grow UP  Hell you might even want to use millet instead of corn. Better and bigger shrooms

NO ! read the shit, there are very few shortcuts if you want to produce more than a handfull of shrooms.

I have done what you are trying to do, sort of. I used finch seed
(mostly millet), which I think would probably work a little bit
better for this. After colonization,I combined the jars until each
was filled to about an inch from the top,and slapped aluminum foil
around the sides. Cased with coco coir, they worked pretty well.
Had to mist a lot to prevent aborts. Of course this requires some
kind of terrarrium, so I dunno if that is stealth enough for what
you need. But as for growing them out of the jars, yes it's possible.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.  Blocking the light from the lower part is a great idea.

My foaf will buy some millet tomorrow.

How many times a day are we talking about misting here?  I imagine it varies with the size of the container.

I think harvesting would be a bit difficult.  Maybe it would be better to use a small ammount of substrate, just enough for one flush and then start the jars over.

I understand that this method won't yield huge ammounts of mushrooms, but that's not the point.

Thanks for the compliment psilopleix

what you wanna do is called INVITRO .
do some search here and also there :
http://www.mycotopia.net/discus/messages/5/10638.html?1061472216

you can go without casinglayer, without terrarium,....
just light, temp + the half-filled jars !

but just some strains work with this, look here :
www.mushmush.nl

i think the cambodian cub is one very good invitro pinner....
also pf classic, matias romero and others...
