BIG Fat Snare Drum
    #19632301 - 02/28/14 09:08 PM (9 years, 11 months ago)

I just got a vintage (84 or 85) Pearl Free Floating Maple Snare Drum, its huge, 8x14.  Threw some good heads on it, and it is KILLER.  I am going to take it down to the studio Tuesday and set it up, Here are some pics....

I think this calls for tripping..... :awesomenod:

I didn't even know those existed. Very clean hardware and shell.

I have a 14x5.6 that I got cheap on eBay. It is my GO-TO snare drum for almost all styles (except jazz as I prefer a bit more thin and airy drum for that). Free-floating maple is amazing.

enjoy!

I was just about to write about this for making tubs, but I actually learned it from my drumming experience.

If you want to make a perfect vent hole for bass drums, or a 2" hole for mono-tubs, the best solution is to clamp some grips on a redbull can, heat the bottom on the stove, then press it into the mylar (or plastic tub). In less than 5 seconds you have a perfect, rip-proof hole.

I put 5 holes in my mono-tubs and it took about 4 minutes to finish a whole tub.

He has the old style one. You can tell by the badge and the indentations ins the lug-rods (what do you call them when there are no lugs?)

They are called 'Free Floating'  No holes drilled for lugs.  Just the rods.  Unscrew the top, lift off the head and rim, and you can pop the whole shell out.  Pearl made this one with the hexagonal rods in 84 and 85.  In 86 the pearl catalog shows round rods.

What's ironic, Pearl Just released the 30th anniversary free floating, I don't even know if they have an 8x14 maple, but they cost $1500 bucks street price.

I put Remo Renaissance Emperor and Renaissance Ambassador Orchestral/Concert snare heads on the batter/reso and it really tamed the overtones.  Now it just sounds dank as hell.

I think you missed my point completely. Normally the lugs include the metal insert that the t-rods connect to, but when there are no lugs (yes, hence the name "free floating") there is no standard name for that part... perhaps "metal insert" is the best.

Just the rods

Rod's means T-rods (tension rods), and there is ALSO the connecting piece between them which is what I was referring to.

Oh, I get it.  Well, it kind of looks like a tube lug, but it doesn't attach to the shell.

When I opened the box yesterday it had some kind of Evans coated head on the top and a clear one on the bottom.  Way too much ring and tuned really high.

Sounds a lot better now with Remo renaissance concert snare heads, thats what I use on all my snares.  renaissance emperors on top and renaissance ambassadors on the bottom.  They look and feel like onion skin.

I got really lucky finding this snare, it matches my kit perfectly.
