You should do a cross section of the Gymnopilus imperialis to show the hollow stem. :smile2:

No I don't mind spiders.  My opinion on them is that if one bites me, I'll hate them.  Until then, we live in peace.

I am of the opinion that most to all spider bites are misdiagnosed.  No one ever sees the brown recluse that bites them, because it's usually a bacterial infection anyway.

I once saw a bizarre noise/performanceish show with a segment where one of the members of the band read about brown recluse spiders while there were a bunch of fuzzy tvs and heavily distorted toy instruments and stuff.  Weird.

I am sorry you had to go through that.  I would have set up a powerful AM transmitter so I could get a word in edgewise through the PA system.

That's how I am with ticks, all night after a hunt I'll be trippin out thinking something is crawling on me, even after I've showered and changed clothes. Last time I took my dog out I pulled over 20 of those bastards off her neck.

Chanterell hunting I always am walking through webs. My baskets or buckets are full
of spiders as I gather mushrooms. They are all over my truck and then in my apt. They are my friends and I
feel bad for them being taken from their homes.

Tick? Oh fuck that shit. I hates ticks. I got one on my back a couple summers ago.

Creepy.

All spiders are poisonous, most aren't nearly enough to hurt humans, the "Deadly" ones are not that deadly even without medical treatment (Not something you could say about deadly mushrooms).  The chances of being bitten by a spider are very low unless you are agitating them, insects & plants have much more potential for danger.

There are a lot of things that get misdiagnosed as brown recluse bites, even in their native range where they are common they rarely bite people.

Quote:

In its native range, the brown recluse is a very common house spider. A colleague in Missouri found 5 in a child's bedroom one night, a person in Arkansas found 6 living under his box spring in his bedroom, during a cleanup at the Univ. of Arkansas, 52 were found in a science lab that was being used everyday, a colleague found 9 living under one piece of plywood in Oklahoma, a grad student and I collected 40 of them in a Missouri barn in 75 minutes, and would have collected more, but we ran out of vials to house them. One amazing story is an 8th grade teacher in Oklahoma checking up on his students avidly collecting material by some loose bricks around a flagpole on an insect collecting trip. In about 7 minutes, 8 students collected 60 brown recluses, picking them all up with their fingers and not one kid suffered a bite. An even more amazing story is that of a woman in Lenexa, Kansas who collected 2,055 brown recluse spiders in 6 months in 1850s-built home.  This family of 4 has been living there 8 years now and still not one evident bite.  (see Vetter and Barger 2002, Journal of Medical Entomology 39: 948-951). When you find brown recluses in an adequate environment, you do not find one, you find dozens. And yet, the people who live with these spiders rarely get bitten nor do they run around in constant fear.

Yeah. I have seen many more. That same summer on a job my co-workers dog
must have walked by a nest of the buggers because we pulled around 20 from his
neck as well.

That was southern Oregon though. Up here where I am at there are not many though. I have not seen any accept for the rain shadow side of the cascades.

Come on up bro!

They hide on vegetation waiting for people like you to come walking by, must of been a lot of them out if he got around 20.  I always tend to find them crawling on me before they bite...

Its better when I know they are on me, but yea, I hate pulling out ticks.  They're pretty cool to photograph if your zoom can get close enough, ventral shots are useful for identification.
