Need help with mycobags (help me, I'm a newb)
    #1962812 - 09/29/03 03:21 PM (18 years, 21 days ago)

My friend bought 5 rye mycobags a few months ago and just now put them to use. He is brand new to mushroom cultivation and needs a little help. He injected 1cc of b+ from thelittleguy into each bag and put them in a dark box inside his closet. The temp is around 70F.

3 1/2 weeks later only two of the bags are showing signs of colonization and they aren't growing all that fast. Could it be too cold for colonization? He has a heating pad but is concerned about risk of fire. Do you guys have any ideas on how to speed up the colonization and can you tell me why the 3 other bags aren't showing signs of colonization yet?

Thanks

here are pics of the front and back of the two bags that have shown colonization signs.

Hey Wake, at 70F I'm surprised those 2 bags have gone that far.

There is a noticible difference in time just between 80F & 85F, so you gotta get the temp up.

Bags can dry out easier than jars so watch the dry heat too.
good luck!

Thanks man. So should I shoot for around 85F? What would be the best way to get temps like that?

I just took the temp of the lowest setting on my heating pad and it's around 96F. I wonder how I can get the temp down in the mid 80's.

Easiest way is to submerge them in a cooler filled with about 2.5" of water and
use a submersible fish tank heater (25-50W about $10). Fool with the little
knob on the top until you get it to keep the water at about 84F. You want to
shoot a bit low on the temp by about 2-3F. Now the bags could leek water,
so set them on a cookey rack above the water. Now they will not dry out and
they should have the right temp. I would not use a heat pad, it could short and
burn your house down after running straight for weeks!! Also put a cap full
of bleach in the water so it eliminates contams.
hope this helps
puggy

easiest incubator supplies: 2 tubs, some 'spacers' (something to fill 3" space), submersible fishtank heater.
instructions: put some water, the spacers and the heater in one tub. put the second tub into the first one. finished.

 sure sped up my projects no end

(I'm a newbie too, so I'm just repeating the tips I've read)

A few tips I've read about those bags are to inject the spores at different parts of the bag (through the same patch, but aimed at different parts of the bag). It also may help to shake it around a bit, but whether or not you should do that now I don't know.

Thanks a bunch guys. I'll pass the tips on to my friend and hopefully these things will be done before too long!

Thanks again!

Your bags look great. By that, I mean they look just like they came out of the box.

Smash those bags. Spread the mycelium around. Loosen the substrate until it feels like what it is: potting soil.

This will speed things up as much as changing your temperature. Warm temperature helps speed things up but b+ should still colonize at 70 degrees. B+ is known for growing in house temperatures. More heat would help... but first, crumble your substrate.

Thanks cervantes, I'm crumbling them right now.

I also went out and bought a 50w fish tank heater and a rubbermaid storage container. I spray painted the container so that light wont enter it and am in the process of mounting the heater.

Thanks for all the help guys, you saved our project!

It's rye berries.

I got my incubation chamber put together, it's looking pretty good. Here are some pics.

That looks like a fire hazard to me. The plastic around the heater might melt. The heater should be fully submergerd in the water.

you need a fully submersible heater THAT ONE isn't!!  :shake: I'm using a sterlite inside of a rubbermaid of the same size. They are slightly different shaped so don't fit perfectly and that leaves a space for water in the bottom where the heater is.

Dammit. I went to Petsmart and that was the only type of heaters they had. I guess I'll take it back today and look again.

Can anyone reccomend a good heater for me? I definetly don't want to burn my house down and did realize that it was getting awefully hot around the plastic so I unplugged it last night.

Ok, I think I found what you guys are talking about. Could someone take a look at the one here ( http://www.petsmart.com/fish/shopping/aquarium%5Fheaters/products/product%5F754.shtml ) and tell me if it would work or not?

Thanks a bunch!

Yeah, breaking up the bags to spread around the mycellium will definitely help. When you notice more growth at the edges of the bag, break it up again.

I broke up the bags last night and it turns out all but 1 are showing signs of mycelium growth. The two that I thought hadn't started colonizing yet have almost completely colonized the middle of the substrate without showing any signs on the outside.

Anyways, I really need help with that fish tank heater now. I'm about to run out and I want to make sure it's the right thing before I go.

Thanks. How should I mount it inside the tub? I'm going to get a cooler that will fit down inside the rubbermaid container but how should I mount the heater to the bottom of the rubbermaid?

Or does it come with a set of suction cups?

I haven't seen this one but it should come with some sort of mount. Just follow the heater's directions and see if it works. You're growing invitro so the heater will speed things up (They will fruit without the incubator). You've got some time to get it working.

In fact, for the sake of your mycobags, I'd make sure the heater works well before moving the bags to the chamber. They will be fine in the cool air (they'll be fine in the light too) while you get the incubator set up.

Now that you've got an incubator, are you going to make a fruiting chamber?

My friend has four mycobags and is on the fence about fruiting them in the bag.

I'm pissed now. The tank heater that I listed a few posts back was out of stock at Petsmart so I asked an employee which one would work best for mounting on the bottom of a fish tank under water and she suggested a 25w heater for $14. I take it home, take it out of the box and it's not fucking submersible!!!!!!!!

Now I have to drive 15 minutes back to petsmart and return it again or I can rethink my design. Can any of you guys suggest a good design for a heater that can't be fully submersed? I really don't feel like driving another half hour to go back and get the fucking thing.

Thanks

I'm gonna hold off on the heater for a day or 2 and just put my bags in the attic. I put a few thermometers up there for an hour or so today during the hottest part of the day and the temp was between 82 and 85F. Sounds perfect to me. I'm gonna leave them up there for a day or two untill I can get out and get a heater.

I'm through with petsmart, I gotta find another pet supply store.

Ok, I got the incubator all set up. i used a small cooler and a fully submersible fish tank heater. The mycobags have been in the incubator for about 12 hrs so far and are already growing like crazy. I mean they are probably going 5-10x faster than they have been growing.

Needless to say I'm a very happy man!
