why crushed oyster shell?
    #1956321 - 09/27/03 01:20 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

im making up some casing mixx, but the 50/50+ tek says: use crushed oyster shells!

now, oyster shells are just CaCO3, like all aquatic skeletons, so i would just go down to the beach and pick up clam shells, takem home and grind real good.

but then id hafta go buy a big mofuggin mortar + pestle, AND id hafta GRIND ivery fucking shell.

isnt there a less labour-intensive option, besides going to a bulk feed outlet and buying a minimum 50kg of the shit?

half way through your post I was gonna recommend some lime but looks like you may have already looked.....I ended up buying a 25kg bag of crushed limestone from a bulk growing place

calcium carbonate supplements? were they in pill form? did you have to extract and work up the caco3 or did you just grind and toss?

you can get crushed oyster shell at the pet store. it's sold as a bird feed supplement.

it's good for a slow-release pH buffer.

if there's peat in your casing mix, it won't do enough on it's own. you'll need some hydrated lime too.

I was personally wondering whether calcium carbonate & no oyster shells would be sufficient to make a casing. I have peat moss & verm of course. Couldn't find oyster shells, but had no problem finding calcium carbonate - is this enough to pull of a bastardized 50/50+ casing? I posted a topic about this but it seems to have disappeared (probably because no one responded).

did you look in the pet store? you can get crushed oyster shell there. you can also get this stuff called 'bed-a-beast' which is used as reptile bedding and is a good non-acidic (mostly) substitute for peat moss.

i've never worked with peat moss because of pH concerns. the only casings i've ever made have been coco coir (bed-a-beast)\verm mixes plus a little oyster shell. they've always worked great for me.
