Southern California - Orange & LA County Hunting

I'm planning a mushroom hunting trip with some of my peeps. Anybody have any success in wilderness areas in these locations?

(sorry if this is an innappropriate post; the location hunting faq wasn't very helpful in this situation)

OK- I'll answer this to say that I think you will have fairly poor luck in these areas but I may be wrong. You MAY find a p. cyan. or a muscaria but that's all I could think of. I am sure that somewhere in southern california there is a place where the cubies grow but as to who's been there..... that is a mystery to all but them. Who knows- THEY might answer you. Beautiful place to be though. Esp. this time of year. GOood luck and look everywhere there is a suitable medium for them to grow on. Half of the fun is hunting and if you don't find that fun then you won't find any fun growing either.

Unfortuently, I could say that you will most likely not even find a single mushroom during this time of the year. Central/southern california hasn't gotten any rain for a while now. We got some summer rains from a few tropical storms that came close, but thats it.

Now through November we will also be experiencing a lot of Santa Ana's! Lots of dryness there.

Id scope out some places to hunt during the winter... You most likely wont be finding anything magic...possibly not even any thing of great edibility either. However, its fun to find mushrooms no matter what!! :laugh:

Cool... I go hiking and explore forest areas frequently, but I've just never known what to look for. I'll be sure to post anything I find for verification if or when I find them.

If you really want an active mushroom, you'll have to look out for some horse stables. Panaeolus subbalteatus are always able ot be found in the right habitats.
