There wasn't many people back then and you might travel all day on the Pere Marquette river and only see a fisherman or two. I certainly miss that life and those innocent times.
Sounds nice, but it is so crowded now it is ridiculous, when in Baldwin I usually prefer the Pine river over the PM but that too is so crowded that fly fisherman and canoeists have to have separate hours and days on that river.
I have a michicraft canoe that if have beaten the hell out of over the years and I would choose one over a kayak anyday. Every year my friends and I take a couple weeks off to canoe most rivers in northern Michigan/ the U.P. and there is pretty much no where a kayak can go that a canoe cant. I've taken mine on the black river, the Michigamme, and all over lake superior, esp. the pictured rocks area. Once you get the basic strokes down I really don't see the need for a kayak unless you plan on eskimo rolling it. Start on relative placid lakes and work your way up with your skill-set, it will come naturally in time.

I loved the Pine and fished it a lot. On a weekday it was all yours. It's pretty sad how it's all gone away. I'm grateful for that time and that I used it well.
It's been 40+ years since I've seen Pictured Rocks. It was so beautiful but lots of bugs.

Yeah, when I go to the pine or pm I try to coincide my trip with the blessing of the bikes festival, it keeps alot of the canoeists away, and most bikers don't seem to be too interested in the water.
The Pictured Rocks still are beautiful to canoe, probably better than anywhere else in Michigan, but since they completely paved the highway between Munising and Grand Marias it no longer is secluded. There are glampers with huge R.V.'s everywhere. Luckily most stay off the water, with the exception of the tour boats.
There once was a time I could go to canoe or cusino lake and be the only one there. When I went last year it was packed with huge campers, each of course had about 4 or 5 yap dogs running loose, shitting on everyone's campsites when they were gone, drunk jackasses fighting all night with the music cranked, etc. It's like a trailer park in the woods now.
I swore that if I go this year I'm bringing by GPS, getting a back country pass and taking an abandoned logging road as far away from humanity as possible when camping. Canoe camping on Grand Island off the coast is nice too as most that do so are actual campers.

I find that when by yourself a kayak works better than a canoe because it is more maneuverable, weighs less than a canoe and it requires less energy to paddle. Also, when you are alone you should not need that much equipment, and the equipment you do need should be easily stowable on or in a kayak.

I would prefer taking a canoe if you want to enjoy the scenery, but if you're just doing it for the adrenaline rush I would do kayak on rapids.

I actually do have some advice on this. Once I canoed a total of 120 miles down and back a river through Arizona or something. It was BS though because I didn't have lots of endurance at the time and another friend just plain didn't want to do shit, so my best friend at the time had to pull almost all the slack the last day.
Canoes are much more stable then kayaks and have much more storage. We didn't have too much food for the 3 or 4 days but we sustained our selves. Also bring some inner tubes for slow currents.
All around it was a very cool experience and I feel it's a very relaxing.
However, white water rafting is the shit!

In my opinion my Kayak is much more stable than any canoe I have been in... even with outriggers on a canoe I dont feel completely stable... but maybe I am just super adapted to my kayak.... but for trips like yours, a canoe-barge is necessary for the gear.
