I thought Laccaria were mycorrhizal? There wasn't a tree within 50 yards of where I found these.

For some Latin is hard to speak. To me it seems to come natural. But I've also have studied Greek & Latin. It takes practice and good reading skills. For instance Psatherella is pronounced (Sath-er-rella). The p is silent like in Psilocybe. One more example would be semilanceata pronounced(semi-lance-ee-ate-a) Pelliculosa (Pell-i-cue-low-sa) hope this helps a little.

The sp. should not be capitalized because it is not part of the latin binomial name. Scientific names should always be italicized in print, or if you are writing them, they should be underlined. I have never taken a latin class. There is no wrong way to pronounce latin, it is pronounced much differently in each country according to their pronunciation rules. In the US Latin sounds in English, in Mexico it sounds like Spanish and Italy it sounds like italian. As long as the person understands what you said, your pronunciation was good enough.
I usually adopt the pronunciations of the experts of each genus.
