And its a well documented fact that many hospitals misidentify spider bites all the time.

"I called the Florida Poison Control Network to confirm these numbers, and was cited 182 total cases and 96 in the Tampa region. The actual numbers are less important than the fact that a significant number of unconfirmed brown recluse spider bites are reported in the state every year. Yet not one specimen of brown recluse spider has ever been collected in Tampa"

Also, the first myth here is relevant.

i buy that.

this article keeps referring to tampa though man...
i am not in tampa.
gainesville is not like the rest of florida.
there are no trees in tampa.
it is basically, the beach.
i am landlocked and surrounded by millions and millions of oak trees.

Sure, but you are a still a bit out of their range, you might have a few specimens introduced here and there, but its doubtful they will establish a widespread population and its pretty certain this has not happened yet.

These are the only images of Loxosceles in FL on bugguide.

Mountain lions are about the only thing that i have a respectfull fear of while alone in the woods in my parts. Its probably because i had a dream once where i tried to fight a mountain lion with my bare hands and got mauled to death. Needless to say i keep multiple ww2 combat knifes on my at arms reach when alone in the woods after that. I dont really fear them anymore, as long as im well prepared.

and ive personally seen them in the wild three times so far in my lifetime.

I am always prepared with my quick-drawl blade... I even wear it kayaking in the unlikely case a white shark comes my way. lol.

I got tagged two years ago by a puss moth caterpillar. May have even posted here about it. I thought I was having a heart attack. Intense throbbing pain starting in my shoulder and over the course of two minutes moving all up and down my arm and into my chest. Called my girlfriend from work to tell her I might have to hit the hospital. Then I found that little furball stuck to my shirt. They leave little marks where the hairs have penetrated. It was a relief finding that thing. Pain went away completely after 15 minutes.

Anybody have a pack of coyotes come at them?  It doesn't happen very often but I will tell you I've never been more scared in my life.  Getting chased back to your vehicle at night by a bunch of yapping coyotes was enough for me.  I carry a 45 in the woods now, but it's also in case I stumble upon a tweeker den,  there have been many small meth ops found in our woods and I could only imagine they could get hostile if spotted.

I have had to traverse a lot of forest in the mountains surrounding the Eugene area and
there are a lot of very jumpy land owners. I have had a couple of
death threats out there.

A few told me the antsy attitude is because of the meth heads. Bummer.

I hiked the BPA power lines from Eugene to Roseburg in search of threatened and endangered
species of plants as well as invasives
and I swear people became more and more nice the more
I got away from Eugene.

Roseburg cops,  Douglas County sherriffs are fucking trigger happy motherfuckers, especially if your skin tone is darker.

Edit: so jus reread that and it sounds pretty harsh.
Wanted to add that ive been held up on the sidewalk in handcuffs at gunpoint outside Roseburg by Doug County Deputies for giving them a name that did not register in their system. I was travelling and they seemed to very much dislike the length of my hair, condition of my clothes and color of my skin, so they went ahead and searched my pack til they find my id, wrote me up a court date for giving false info and left. Took my tobacco pipe, broke my favorite glass.

Edit: end rant.

Oh, yeah... actually, when hunting deep into the Mendo woods I fear wondering into Mexican mafia guerrilla grow sites..... that probably scares me more than anything else... booby-traps and shit... its no joke, which is why most people I know wont do guerrilla grows anymore.. too dangerous... plus its just gotten too congested... I have heard first-hand stories of people driving up roads to prospect for sites, only to return to their truck and find a big tree fall across the road they had just came in on.. the only way out.... its a warning to get the fuck out of there and don't come back or we will kill you.

really? coyotes have never been a threat. one time we were tripping on datura and after getting into a fight with a rose bush my buddy then tried to stomp out a coyote before we stopped him. (very fucked up yes, but he was hallucinating super hard)

but then again ive only ever come across groups of 1-3. never a whole pack.

maybe yours are bigger though. the ones in my area are pretty tiny.

All this is why I like my good ole' Hoosier woods. No Mexican cartels, rarely ever any bears or cougars (the feline kind), not very many poisonous snakes, or really any kind of deadly animal. Haven't seen any clowns or zombies either, yet... There are so many deer, rabbit, turkey, raccoons, possum, skunk, and squirrel that the coyotes would rather leave humans alone. The meth heads around here aren't smart enough to cook in the woods, they just do it in their homes. And most land owners will let you walk, forage, and hunt their land. Especially if you share your haul.
