Humidity problem?

I have the temp in my terrarium stablized at about 81 degrees. Nothing is inside the terrarium--I've been trying to make sure everything works right before I proceed. I leveled the bottom with 1.5 to 2 inches of perlite and poured a 1/2 inch of water in and a little bit of peroxide. But the humidity level is staying around 85%. I don't know if something is wrong or if this is because the terrarium is empty. Any suggestions are appreciated.

That amount of perlite and water should have the terrarium at 99% humidity. Possible causes could be that the hygrometer is not calibrated correctly or the terrarium is not tightly sealed.

I don't have a hygrometer...As far as the seal, I have a rubbermaid lid with plastic taped over the top. I then have two towels draped over the whole terrarium. The lid should be fine. What about this hygrometer though. What exactly does it do, and can't I get one at a local smokeshop?

The seal should be fine then. You might actually be at 99% humidity. If water is condensating on the side of the terrarium you should be fine. I would recommend the electronic hygrometer you can pick up at The Home Depot for around $15. It has a nice Max/Min feature that tracks swings in Temp and Humidity over the last 24 hours.

how do you know? a hygrometer is a humidity meter - as ^^^ said, they are famously innacurate unless you pay hundreds. if you don't have one, where'd you get 85% from? maybe everything is perfect

Pet store reptile hygrometers are worthless pieces of shit. You get what you pay for.

I have a thermometer/humidity gauge combo. It ranges from 80-85 degress on the humidity gauge and 82-84 degrees on the thermometer...so I'm assuming humidity is different when it comes to percentages? There is plenty of condensation on the lid and sides.

Does anyone think this is a problem, or is the humidity level probably fine?
