Growing in a tv bench
    #19594226 - 02/20/14 11:22 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello! So my question is, is this possible?
I'm thinking of having a monotub ( 8 gallon tub ), but the FAE is going to be an issue.
Why I want to have it in a tv bench is just that I don't need to worry about hiding it every time I have family over ( and also I don't live in a big apartment ) . I have an usb fan: http://www.usbnow.co.uk/images/usb_fan_02_L.jpg
If I have it running inside the cabinet, will this work?
Any thoughts on alternative ways to have an good FAE?

If your tub was the size of a cigarette pack, that fan will do fine.

I don't know how long your family typically stays over, but if it's just for a few hours I'd just find a place to stow it for a while.  Or go small and get a cake or 2 going and put them in a 2 liter bottle to fruit.  Find a little cubby somewhere to put your mini FC.

Just keep it wherever you want and when your family comes over hide it and throw a towel over it or something:goodluck:

Hmm, Well doesn't it work if I buy an air pump, and pump in new air through water, because when the air bubbles pop they release oxygen, so fae problem solved?

stealth grows will always have FAE problems. You might get away with an air pump if you insist on going stealth.

No bro. Too complicated.
Look through some of these.

Also check out RR's videos on how to grow mushrooms.
This hobby is more about taking your time and doing everything right. And to keep it simple!
Research a lot and then attempt to cultivate mushies. Not difficult. :goodluck:

A useful air pump is not stealth at all
I have experimented with a small martha like setup, glass box ~100l with an airpump ~600l/h running constantly and ultrasonic humidefier on timer
It works, but its pretty damn loud

Ok, I don't know exactly what a tv bench is, but are you able to leave it open until someone comes over then shut it?

Secondly, I AM NOT DOWN PLAYING the importance of FAE... BUT it isn't everything.  I have the problem of FAE in some of my tubs, etc... but guess what? MUSHROOMS STILL GROW! They might be tall and skinny and have fuzzy feet and the almighty yield may not be the same as a tub set up properly for FAE... but they do what mushrooms are supposed to do.

I understand the purpose of this forum is to try to purvey and refine the perfect way to grow mushrooms, but sometimes it seems like different peoples situations don't allow them perfect situations, and instead of explaining to people that its not ideal but will probably still get you mushrooms it seems like people tend to throw out advice in terms of "if you can't do it perfect watch a video or don't do it"

I have space issues and discretion issues also and I've been growing a bunch of different ways, I have tubs going, but I also like bags, because they can be hidden pretty much anywhere.  I've also been growing somethings invitro with no FAE at all.  I had a couple cakes left over from my PF grow, all the rest contamed and I didn't want to keep up with two cakes and they were starting to dry out and I needed the SGFC for something else, I almost threw them away but instead I broke them up and tossed a few handfuls of coir/verm in a bag with them and impulse sealed it.  I never punched holes or gave them FAE until first harvest when I finally cut the bag open and I got about 12 grams dried, they were tall and skinny... but they did the same thing short fat ones do. I also have a few mini tubs that are in tight spaces that I forget to fan and they still give mushrooms.

Sorry for the long rambling, but my point is you can worry about not having an absolutely perfect set up and never growing anything and NOT HAVE ANY MUSHROOMS.... or you can grow mushrooms in shitty conditions.... AND HAVE MUSHROOMS.

I don't care about yeild, I don't even eat mushrooms I just like growing them, after I let stuff colonize I neglect the hell out of a lot of things and am bad about FAE and I have more mushrooms that I could ever need for myself, and I don't even eat the damn things.

OP if you want stealth,  grow sclerotia. No FAE required :awesomenod:

Hmm..Interesting, I have read a little about in vitro. How long does it take to grow in vitro?
I have considered buying a bigger fan inside the tv bench ( English is not my first language so I can't really find another word for tv bench, but it's basically a furniture to support a tv and also keep stuff inside the furniture). Anyways, there is quiet alot space in it, I can find a 8 gallon fc and also have space left, so I don't know if I'm going to have a fan in it or not.
But, the tv bench has a big hole in the back ( facing a wall but still enough space for air to come trough ), and also it's not seal tight, so I don't know if that's enough fae?
It would be easier to just have the fc in there..
Any help here or is it impossible?

Just focus on sucking air out of the space instead of blowing it around inside it. One of those 12v PSU fans works for me. On a timer to turn on for five minutes 3-6 times a day. Just don't electrocute yourself.

Hmm, I like that, I never thought of doing it like that, sucking air out would be easier...

Well that depends on different factors.... mainly how long your substrate takes to colonize, if you have just a little bit of sub with a high amount of spawn it will colonize fast, if you have alot of sub and not much spawn it will take longer to colonize. But it's averaged about a week for me, some longer on the bigger bags. But after full colonization you should have fruits ready to go within a week.

But I think you missed the bigger picture of what I was saying, if you want a tub, do a tub.  If you can't get ideal FAE in the cabinet, open it and fan it frequently, but either way, you'll get fruits.  If that is what you have to work with.... work with it.  It's not like it'll be a huge lose if it doesn't work out.  Best case scenario, it works great and you get alot of mushrooms.... Worst case scenario, you get a shitty less than ideal yield of mushrooms.  I think anyone here who doesn't agree a shitty yield of mushrooms is better than no mushrooms is LYING!

growing invitro containers would be my suggestion.  I would use 5050 waterproof blue leds.  also haveing some scelrotia to sit on is never a bad idea.  look at it as a project to forget about along with your other projects
throw the leds and a few invitro containers in a stroage footstool and youll be a celestial traveler in no time

If you find a foil baking pan with a tall enough lid, you could fruit a tray by poking holes all over the lid. Like a cross between a mono and a sgfc. Just store it wherever is safe.

You just have to worry about lighting, but it will probably work regardless
