Hydroponic Salvia *Update**11-19*

Well, I just ordered 3 Salvia plants, the thought occurred to me, why not go hydro? So I did a little research, didn't find much, but what I did find said it could be done and that they would actaully be very happy. My idea is to set up deep water cultures/bubblers and use some flouro lightning. Since I am not too experienced I had a few questions. 1. Humidity? I'm thinking of little humidity tent thingies over the plants, made of ziplock bag material to allow for air exchange, any problems with this? 2. When the cuttings arrive (from BB) it says they will be rooted, so then I just place them into the net pots filled with the growth medium ?(hydrotron/geolite expanded clay pellet thingies) 3. Nutrients? Any special needs besides the basic ones? Help from anyone with hydro or salvia experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Salvia will most likely come from a high humidity enviroment, so it would be wise to put it in a humidity tent at first. After it looks healthy you can start lowering the humidity slowly, and it will get used to it and be fine if you do it slowly. I have mine so they get misted in the morning and at night and they are growing great. Just treat it like any plant when it comes to hydro nutrients.

I wouldn't recommend salvia plants from BB.
Their source is shit. I can't believe they're still selling them.

Well lets say you are excited about getting yuor plants i know i was here what i did 10 days befor i bought my plants 1 - 430 Watt HPS light 1 - Deep water culture hydro 20 days and 400 bucks later i got my plant they recovered very well hardly no wilting in hydro i had a dome for humitity too. 2 month after hardly no growth. So i put them in soil and they did very well after that. From 6 plants to start with just about 1 year later i got 14 cutting NOT including my frist 6. Well summer time salvia grows like mad. I got 8 - 40 watt fluro's and my plants love it. ANd my 430 is off for the pass 4 months now. If i had to do it over again i get a 120-200 Watt MH light. With a auto h2o mister As for hydro keep the ppm at 300-400? This is low for most plants PH 5.5 - 6.5 http://www.salvia-divinorum-scotland.co.uk/salvia/plantcare/index_cuttings.htm

flouro is only good for sprouting seedlings. You should get a 400watt metal halide light. Ask around, i got mine from some company that bought too many and sold it to me for $40. I have had the most success with drip systems. For cheap nutrients get sams deep feed from wallmart andcalcium nitrate from a nursrey. Calcuim nitrate is a neccesity if your not going to spend the money for expensive hydro nutrients. Everything can be done for pretty cheap if you be resourcful and your plants will grow great. Good luck.

Were talking about Salvia here, not Cannabis.
Salvia needs very little light. fluoro is fine for Salvia.

Not salvia.
If you use MH for salvia you would need a 20 watt.

so you move the MH light farther away from the plant so it doesnt do any damage. The point is that they give off blue and green light waves, and is better for vegative growth. If you can get a MH for cheap then great,But yes a fluoro would do in this case.

Thanks for all the input guys
Babyhittler : kinda late now, hopefully the cuttings will be good, but thanks for the heads up
Hydro grower : yeah I'm just going to use flouros for now, depending on how this goes I might look into a mh light.
Looking forward to this, just got the airpumps and stones, plus rigging up a little thing to hold the lights. I'll post pics once I get around to finding my camera

Salvia do well in hydro, just don't cook them with HID. It's not pot. So have them in the peripheral of the grow or under fluro.
Nutes, 2/3 strength you'd use on pot.
Pic, striked salvia clones in flood/drain crate on bio-mix sea acids hydro chelates. They strike dead easy.

So how far would you put a 400 watt HPS away from the plants.
ANd what is the wattage of your MH and how far away from the tops of your plants?
IF you could help me out i might thinking of hooking my HPS up.

3 feet from a 400w MH. Salvia divinorum is a rain forest plant, it grows under a canopy of other plants.
I have read though, that it can take FULL sunlight in a greenhouse if given 90%+ R/H. That's not easy to do, unless you employ foggers.
So for practical purposes under HID (without foggers) go 3 feet from the 400w. Just set them up in a "stadium effect". Just perch pots on bricks on the sides, so the profile of the grow is like a dish.
You'll know if you get too close, you get a bleaching of the leaves.
If you're using bigger lamps, like 1000w MH/HPS and in multiple config, then use light balancers to spread.

actually i have my mother sally in a closet with a 250 HPS right over her. she is very happy, dark healthly green growth.. And the RH% is very very low if nill.. its growing better than my sally in my greenhouse with flouro's.

Oh, one more thing.
Once I get the plants, assuming they have roots, would I then place them directly into net cups filled with expanded clay pellets?

flubbilynumpkins, no you'll need to put a humidity dome over the top of them for 2 to 4 weeks so they strike without wilt from the lamp. The pic I posted had a dome over the top. Humidity 90% is good for striking.
Btw, you could use cut down plastic milk/softdrink bottles over the top of them on the expanded clay net cups. Keep it easy.
Salvia is very easy to grow. Even broken off bits just pushed into algae covered lumps of rockwool will take off.

*update* Set up all the buckets and such. Got some extra funding (long story) and invested in a 400w metal halide since this will also be used to other plants (tomatos, herbs(no, not the fun kind )).
Unfortuneatly the light seems to be too big for the glass on the reflector, gotta take it back and figure out some new light setup, new reflector or no glass or something like that. Have some cuttings of pepper plants rooting right now to tide me over until the salvia arrives. Hopefully I'll post pics later tonight
