Portable speaker for the trail?

The UE Mini Boom and the Braven BRV-1 are the main two I've been looking at but they both have more bells and whistles than I need. I don't care about bluetooth (gonna use a 3.5mm) or integrated controls or anything. Basically just looking for something that isn't too heavy that I can strap to my pack and that isn't crazy fragile without venturing past $100. Obviously portability is going to be a trade-off for sound quality, but each of those seem to have at least some amount of low end which sounds appealing.
Any of you guys hike to tunage or have any recommendations?

I did a lot of research and ended up getting the JBL Charge. It has a USB charging port on it that can charge your phone, long battery life, durable design, kickass bass.
$99 on eBay.

I have this, and it works great. I was amazed by how much sound actually comes out of it. Not stereo quality sound by any means, but I am really happy with it. And its cheap! Zip ipod inside, clip to backpack, and you're good to go.

Also comes with a neoprene case that has a look to hook to your bag, etc.

Pretty nifty! Do you know how long it survives on the three AAAs?

Rad, thanks. That sounds pretty promising and I hadn't come across it yet. I especially like that people mention it can get pretty loud without sacrificing clarity. Have you tried much bass heavy/electronic music with it?
I clicked the link in your sig- I'll for sure post back any interesting results from Sun Theta, I'll probably try it tonight. Binaural beats are super awesome. Hand of God from idoser, and Transcendence and Between Worlds from Hemisync have been the most effective for me in my years of experimentation. I found one called Boxed Nirvana on some weird site one time that's pretty neat too.

Not too sure if they are available in the US but anyway:
http://minirigs.co.uk/
Get one of these bad boys, or go for two and a sub-woofer (all very portable and high quality audio).
You will not be disappointed.

Doesn't look like they're available in the US but those look impressive. I watched a video on youtube of someone with two of them plus the sub and woooow. If I had the money for that setup, I could definitely live with the extra five pounds in my pack in exchange for having that kind of sound quality in the middle of the woods haha.

These are three of the best hip hop songs to test bass and they both sound amazing on my jbl charge. Electronica will work great too.

Please don't tell me you blast music while hiking. Nothing makes an out of towner stand out like a blasting music in the wilderness.

Planning on it anyway haha. Not all the time though, and where I usually go backpacking there's a pretty slim chance of encountering another human. I don't really give a hoot about appearing like an out of towner, but I'd definitely be respectful in a situation where other people were around
I'm considering putting a pickup on my travel guitar, running it through a lil delay pedal and then into one of these speakers via a 3.5mm adapter. Psychedelic forest echo jamz sound massively appealing. Springtime needs to make like Ram Dass.

Sweet, thanks for the recommendation. I'm pretty stoked that affordable rechargeable speakers have finally reached the point where they sound decently okay. I'm going to keep an eye on craigslist for one of the UE models or the JBL

I heard Newt Gingrich was available but he would overload your backpack and is very pricy.

My friend, I'm afraid you have completely missed the point of observing nature. If you must have constant human remembrance through music in order to feel comfortable in nature at least have the decency to use the free earbuds that come with every thing nowadays. Most folks I know go into nature to escape such things as loud music.

that's a hell of a thing to say to someone... if a fella wants some music while he hikes, that's his business... not up to you to determine how someone else takes his pleasure...

Haha yeah that sounded pretty judgmental, it's all good though.
If you'd like to elaborate, Star, I'd be interested. What is the point of observing nature? Maybe I've missed it because I haven't known what to look for. You presume that my desire to listen to music while hiking is a result of a need for constant human remembrance. Can you explain that in more detail? I'm not sure what you mean. Could make for interesting discussion.

My bad folks, I assumed that theses speakers would be used in a public wildlife management area and therefor cause noises pollution that hurts wildlife.
I shouldn't of assumed you missed the point of nature. How could I possibly know for sure what the point of observing nature is at all?
I live in a city where people are constantly blaring music, I graduated from a high-school thats hallways and often classrooms where constantly bloated with cell phone speaker music, so I'm jaded towards this behavior in general.
Sometimes when I'm hiking I hear loud country music and I always end up picking up beer cans and shotgun shells.
Music is my favorite thing man has ever invented, that being said; it's my believe that if your goal is to observe nature and in the process enjoy the abstract thought processes and the elation of returning to the source of life it evokes you would be more successful if remembrances of humanity were kept to a minimum. opinion
If your in public use gosh darn headphones if everyone wanted to hear music they'd be wearring theirs too. Noise pollution is real.
peace,
shep

Who cares. The batteries are just gonna die anyways and he'll inevitably spend a most his time not listening to music. Music in the woods is awesome IMO, if you have good taste, that is.
