Psychedelic music to trip to
    #1959287 - 09/28/03 11:29 AM (18 years, 1 month ago)

I am just interested in anyone who has my taste in music and what other CDs they can recommend.

Here is my list.

Piper at the gates of dawn: Pink Floyd. Pink Floyds first album with Barrett at the helm. Childlike lyrics with otherworldly music. Fantastic.

Saucerful of Secrets: Pink Floyd. Pink Floyds second album. Barrett has little input however as Rodger Waters is trying to emulate Syd it still has that fantastic music though prob not as together on the Lyrical side. You can also hear slight prog undertones. Still Fantastic.

Relics: Pink Floyds early days collection. Some excellent songs in the vain of Piper. Syd is here in all his tripped out childlike glory. One of the Best.

In Search of Space. Hawkwinds second album. I cant stand anything by Hawkwind after this album. These are songs which Hawkwind were playing at festivals during the late 60's. Absolute tripped out heaven.

SF Sorrow: Pretty Things. This CD is a gem. I rate it above Sgt Peppers. On very similar lines but has a heavier sound and far deeper. Brillant.

Cauldron: Fifty Foot Hose. What can I say about this CD. One of the best Psychedelic bands Ive ever heard from the States. The music is utterly fantastic and the singers voice, well think Jefferson Airplane WHITE RABBIT and and some.

United States of Americe: United States of America. Their only album and an absolute classic. Lyrics on the darker side of American middle class life yet sang in an upbeat way. The music is again supberb yet really hard to describe. Very ahead of its time.

HP Lovecraft:HP Lovecraft Double CD. The best West Coast sound Ive heard full stop. The second cd goes well into more heavy lysergic inspried music. A couple of dud tracks but buy it.

Soft Machine Vol 1&2: Soft Machine. This group gigged with Floyd in the Sixties at the famous UFO club. Nothing much sounds like these. Robert Wyatts voice is brillant the music is psychedelic jazz(though more psychedelic). All members were heavily jazz influnced. In fact they were all really jazz muscians. The group went downhill once Wyatt left and become a rather boring Jazz/rock outfit. A must Buy.

Caravan: Caravan: Yeah shit name but this album is again classic psych. A real earthy wispy like atmoshere. In similar lines to Soft Machine. This group then went pure prog and shit. However this Album is a classic.

Camembert Electrique,Flying Teapot,Angels Egg: GONG. What a group David Allen at the helm and what a tripped out man he is! This music is pure Mushroom pixie music. They are still going and as tripped out as ever. If you like your mushies buy these.

Silver Apples: Silver ApplesDouble CD. The most bizzare sound Ive ever heard. Well ahead of their time or just mad Ive no Idea. Some wierd boomong bass sound with tripped out lyrucs over the top. Odd yet some will love it.

Finally a quick list of others.

Revolver,Sgt Peppers: The Beatles
Safe as Milk: Captain Beefheart.
Forever Changes: Love. very good indeed.
Hawkwind:Hawkwind
Music in a dolls house: Family
Trip thru hell: CA Quintet
Crazy World of Arthur Brown: Crazy World of Arthur Brown

I love how terence Mckenan sings the "Gnome" song from Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn.  And shpongle samples him doing it.  See, it all comes back together in the end

Both Shpongle CD's, and the third will undoubtedly be great
Songs by Yes are great tripping
Death Cab for Cutie souds like liquid aural euphoria.

Songs I didn't like tripping

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother Suite - I love this song, sober or stoned I think its a brilliant, overlooked masterpiece.  On shrooms, it was "shark attack music" and I wanted it turned off immediately

Queen - Again, one of my favorite bands, IMHO one of the best rock and roll bands.  On shrooms they sounded ridiculous, and irritating.  Turned em off.

Metallica - "dude what are you trying to do to me?? Turn this shit off now!!"

Any ORB will be good
the orb's music will take you to another world when you
trip
the music was made for shrooms and LSD
it's the best shit I've ever listened to while tripping!

If you like The Orb (god I used to play it to death 12 years ago when I used to do an awful lot of LSD) then IMHO The Ishness by Future Sound of London takes its crown easily. Its nothing like any of there previous stuff but it is so original/earthy and for LSD music prob the best CD/Album released in decades.

Im telling you go out and buy it ASAP you WILL not be disappointed.

Download "blue calx". When that bass hits, it feels soooooo good. It comes every once in a while, and you anticipate the next bass hit. It just takes you to another level.

Bucephalis Bouncing Ball is another great one. And the Speed Racer remix.

You missed one very good Floyd album - Ummagumma Live. I'm not that fond on the studio CD, but the Live CD just blows me away. It's a must have for most of my trips.
Other good albums
Tool - Lateralus
Mr Bungle - Disco Volante (not for the faint hearted however)
Coil - Musick to Play in the Dark Vol 1 & 2
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, and F#A#
Deftones - White Pony (it may not be pyschedelic by genre, but it goes down very well on trips)
Gorillaz - Self titled
Led Zeppelin - III
Chemical Brothers - Surrender
Devin Townsend - Terria
Earthtone 9 - arc'tan'gent (metal, but rather intelligent/spiritual focused metal... a surprising favourite for mushrooms)
Opeth - Orchid (again, metal, but the melodies on this album are almost like a blissed out, heavier version of Floyd)
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
Acid Mothers Temple - Pataphysical Freak Out MU!! (but I don't know if I could handle this tripping - although it's VERY psychedelic, it can get a bit intense/scary)
Shalabi Effect - Self Titled, and The Trial of St Orange
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R (stoner rock, but I can imagine it'd work well with the pyschedelic experience)
Shulman - Soundscapes and Modern Tales (similar vein of music as Shpongle, but entirely the same as their work. some parts sound Shpongle-ish, but most of it is rather original)

Not mostly pyschedelic music, but those are my picks for tripping music. And just because it's not labelled as pyschedelic, doesn't mean it isn't good for tripping

I can't believe noone has posted this yet. But hands down, the absolute best album for tripping is The Flaming Lips'Zaireeka. It is a four disc set and all four CDs are to be played at once in different stereos, arranged cardinally in the room. You have no idea how intense this is.

Sheepish already mentioned them but I have to put my vote in for Shalabi Effect...they are my shrooming necessity (my sober necessity as well.) They're middle eastern influenced psychedelia/art rock. They can be found at www.shalabieffect.com and www.alien8recordings.com

Mogwai, hangedup, mum, godspeed you black emperor, and a silver mt zion are some bands I'm rather fond of sober or tripping as well.

Last trip I had I was at my boy's house and they were having a concert downstairs, we went in to check out a metal band and were half overwhelmed half totally annoyed. It was violence. Anger just freaks me out when I'm on mush.

See my post a little above yours.

Yes The Ishness is a classic.

The only other modern music I listen to trip to are:

The KLF: The Chill Out  Just cant be beaten

Funki Porchini: Hed Phone Sex. Excellent

James: Wah Wah

I like The Coral but its all been done before and better.

Most Modern Bands seem to lack the atmosphere that I like.

I have over 150 pysche Cd's and those mentioned are my best.

I would love to know of a good Dead Cd. The ones Ive heard are quite country sounding. I believe their live ones are good though.

Talvin Singh

Tabla beat science.

You will ascend to a new plane listening to these groups.

Traditional Indian instruments (tabla, sitar, erue) mixed with atmospheric trance and techno.

The best trip i ever had on shrooms was while listening to this music. I actually was in extacy. It felt great.

mmm, most all of these reccomendations are over-hyped, especially shpongle. you want to go with the most elusive and suave pieces of dark ice. concept albums. by a guy named wolfgang voigt, GAS. zauberberg, pop, oktember, and konigsforst...these are the german recordings of the Rhine forest on acid.

GAS .

btw you want to get the LP so you can slow it down to 33 rpm -8%.

starlight mints rule, godspeed you black emperor rules, alot of the bands you guys have listed are good, but i wouldnt want to trip to them. I recomend the following...with headphones on of course (the only way to listen to music).
-Explosions in the sky, album: "those who tell the truth....."
-The Orb , album: "live '94"
-aphex twin, album: "selected ambient works 2"
-aphex twin, album: "druqks"
-modest mouse, album: "the moon and antartica"

the modest mouse is fucking insanity so be ready. i have yet to have a bad trip to live '94 by the orb, go all the way through disk A and b, i garuntee you will have a good time (given you have headphones on). I have tripped to live '94 roughly 30 or 40 times, and each time it was me lying in bed in the dark with headphones on...i highly reccomend this. ive hit level 4 about 50% of the time when listening to live '94, it seems to boost me up alot. aphex twin is good, but can also be too intense. explosions in the sky is good for the afterglow. Makes you feel good to be alive, real real real good.

~J-Slice~

ps.....seriously, listen to both disks....live '94, i cant say it enough, the orb is amazing.

I saw Modest Mouse last year...they played "I Came As A Rat" for 18 minutes and Isaac Brock cut his arm with a broken beer bottle and had to stop the show early because he was bleeding everywhere, like on the crowd and everything.

I know many of these have already been listed, but here is my personal repertoire of CDs.

Aphex Twin - Drukqs
Orb - UFOrb
Orb - Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld
Orbital - Orbital 2
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible

In my playlist:

some Astral Projection
some Infected Mushroom
some Hallucinogen
some more Shpongle
some more Pink Floyd

And I'm weird but I like a lot of classic rock when I'm tripping (Beatles, Dylan, Dead, Hendrix, Lou Reed, Keller, Led Zeppelin, Phish, Rush, the Who, etc.).

Peace and love,
Tim.

I wanted to say, that if anyone likes Shpongle they should definitely check out Entheogenic. ALOT like Shpongle, but more spiritual sounding....

well what kind of music do you normally listen to?

If you listen to electronic stuff already, check out "Behind Closed Eyelids"

If you listen to more "conventional" music, check out "Dorset Perception"

Incubus. Some rap, forest for the trees. And one band that im surprised i havent seen on here is Fleetwood Mac. One of my last trips thats all i listened to the whole time with some glowsticks, WOW. They are AWESOME. I'd like to add i saw Radiohead outdoors in cleveland this summer on shrooms with a bunch of friends and that was incredibily amazing. Awesome lightshow. Theres probably more but i got to piss. Shroom on ya'll

Mark Farina (mushroom jazz series)
Phree Nugz (www.phreenugz.com)

The mushroom jazz series has 4 CDs sold seperately. Phree Nugz I dont think you can buy, but you can probably download a copy from their website, or ask them to send you one, or see them live and ask them, or get someone to burn you a copy  :tongue2:

Good shroomin music.

heres my list

aphex twin - selected ambient works (85-92 or 2) very good shit
atom and his package - a society of a people named elihu hilarious sober but really kinda creepy while tripping
beatles - white album good for a crazy evening, just think about the manson family
bob marley - songs of freedom stoner music, yes, but its gotta put you in the right frame of mind
dj shadow - preemptive strike or the private press two of my favorite albums anytime, but theyre good while tripping as well
dead kennedys - any album my punk rock favorite, any album will suffice. if you're new to em check out either fresh fruit for rotting vegetables or plastic surgery disasters/in god we trust inc.
dr octagon - octagonecologyst it seems ive got a thing for strange music. again one of my favorites, its got a schizophrenic edge to it (kool keith was diagnosed at some point i think)
hendrix - axis bold as love the title track is one of my favorite songs ever
pink floyd - dark side of the moon or the wall dark side of the moon is one of my favorites, dark side of oz is always good too, and the wall is just a classic
van halen - 1984 with songs like panama, hot for teacher and jump, how could this not be great to listen to? fucking hilarious
x - los angeles old school punk rock, great album

orb-live in 93
mmw-combustication
brian eno-the drop
yo la tengo - you can here the hart beating as one-track 14 on repeat
phish - junta
brian eno & david byrne - my life in the bush of ghosts
bradford reed - (his newest album)
psycho on da bus

all personal favorites, each one adds a distinct flavor to a trip. But here is one rule I always follow, do not change music while tripping. If the music gets old turn it off. A change like that can have world shattering consequences.

some clarification. If you listen to music with headphones on do not change the music. When something is getting beamed directly into your skull, the change is huge.
but headphones are definitly the way top go

Yeah China > Rider is always nice!  But what about Scarlet > Fire?  Or Dark Star > China > Eleven?  St. Stephen > Not Fade Away > St. Stephen...  Too many too list that I LOVE!  The Dead ARE the best music to trip to, especially wearing headphones.  Jerry's guitar work on Dancin in the Streets (5/8/77) takes me to new planes of existence

I second that. When I saw them play D/R/T live I swear I was high off my ass and I wasn't even on anything. What an experience.

just to prove you wrong ceephax (acid crew)

I love Autechre, but I imagine listening to Confield while tripping would be very disturbing. I'll try it next time.

BOC really freaked me out though.. I put on Music has the right to children the first time I tripped, and that shit is evil. All those scary little kid voices rambling on..

My reccomendation is:

Biosphere - Insomnia (No peace for the wicked)

I'd recommend Shpongle Falls from Are You Shpongled? if you can only listen to one of their songs.

Pink Floyd - Piper at The Gates of Dawn... probably one of their best, good psychedellic music

ANYTHING by Legendary Pink Dots... If you haven't heard them definatly check them out. Particularly "City of Needles" and "A Styrchnine Kiss"

when i'm tripping, music is almost always just way too contrived and artificial for it. i'd rather be listening to "real" sound... breathing, water dripping somewhere, the wind... silence. music is distracting and noisy to me when i'm tripping. music that is considered "trippy" is the worst. i'll be on a trip with some people and they'll throw on the doors or some old pink floyd... stuff i love when stoned or sober.... but is definitely NOT for me when i'm tripping.

of course pink floyd but there is much more.
a personal favorite is world music, it's great because a foregn tounge makes the vocals take on more of an instrumental role because you cant understand what they are saying.
ali akbhar kahn-everything
ravi shankar-everything
the dead- infrared roses, grayfolded, anthem of the sun
country joe and the fish- electtic music, fixin to die

good luck and happy shroomin'!!

Breeders, Om, Love & Rockets, Beatles, Stones, Floyd, Bob Moses, Neville Bros, Rebirth, Meters, Demeola, Trower (New albums are FG!), Oh so Much More. Hard rock mainly. Sometimes I digress to Skinny Puppy, and ambient stuff like United States of Ambience albums, Seefeel, Kruder, Air, Psychic TV, 45 Grave, LA Punk, Kak - I can't remember!

Phish is probably my favorite. I'm sure it's been said before, but their music really lends itself to the psychedelic state. Widespread panic is pretty good too. Also, you can't fuck with The Beatles. Especially Sergeant Peppers and Let It Be.

Wow!!! you guys suck, anyone who has brains knows that the best music for tripping is sublime, whether your toking reefer or munching shrooms just throw in the song "Lets go get stoned" right in the middle of your trip, crank the bass just right and that shit will hit you like a tank man!

the tracks from samurai champloo, by the nujabes are pretty chill, and the theme song is kinda nifty too (if you're into hiphop).

definitely suggest:

thievery corporation (talented, instrumental, some vocals, not too relaxed, but still pretty chill, good percusions)

dresden dolls (insane lyrics, crazy sounds, weird alternative kinda hard sounding, punk rock cabaret, if that makes any sense. only if you can really handle your mind real well tripping)

the flaming lips (by trippers, for trippers, mind-expanding lyrics, complex and creative music)

dead can dance (can't really explain em, but weird new-agey kinda shit)

morcheeba (way chill, beautiful voice, good for the beach)

aphex twin (electronic percusions, can be mind-numbing at time, pretty fast, i think it falls into idm)

the best tho, in my opinion, is juno reactor, or shpongle. i've used these as the "soundtracks" for my trips, and they are quite perfect, inspiring a mood with intensely complex music.

A couple of new ones that I found, thanks to erags, was

It's a Drug - Snippet
Full of great samples, speaking on mind-changing substances.

Teh Foxxor - Donovan Trounce
It's like a ferris wheel ride from ancient times, except with piano dancing in the end.

Surprised no one mentions The Mars Volta in here :p

"Woodsmoke" by Nest is some great Ambient Folk, it always takes me to the same fantasy world
"Soundsystem" 311

And if you can handle it put on some Acid Bath
