Blower to match 36"x24"x5.8" FP filter (build complete, laminar flow achieved !)
    #19585325 - 02/18/14 02:05 PM (10 years, 10 months ago)

Hello, I am using fungiperfecti's 36x24x5.8 filter http://www.fungi.com/product-detail/product/36-x-24-x-58-micron-filter.html.

At 6 sq ft surface area, I need at least 600 cfm at the sum of the static pressure of the filter and the prefilter material..

So, will a 780 cfm inline fan be sufficient? http://www.plantlightinghydroponics.com/hurricane-10-inch-inline-fan-780-cfm-p-3804.html

or should I go for the 1060 cfm fan? http://www.plantlightinghydroponics.com/hurricane-12-inch-inline-fan-1060-cfm-p-3805.html

I've requested data sheets for these fans and am aware that the fans are more available/cheaper on ebay, but maybe someone here already has the data sheets for these fans or a better recommendation?

thank you

i beleive the sp of that filter is 1" so with your pre filter u will @=1.2sp +/-..  i used fp
item #: EAFB2 ... i use this blower with my  HEPA filter 24x24 and i get 118 cfm out of the face of my flow hood

Thank you for the prompt response! That blower is listed at 1040 cfm.

Considering I have an extra 2 sq ft of surface area, will I be able to reach at least 100 cfm out of the filter with a 1060 cfm fan, then?

You want a blower, not a fan.  That fan data sheet doesn't list cfm @ static pressure, so assume it will fall to near zero.  You need to find a blower at grainger.com or elsewhere which has a chart showing it will deliver around 750 to 800 CFM @ .8 to 1" W.G.

The prefilter is on the intake side and by definition can't build static pressure.  It has resistance, not sp.

RIght,  it is kinda the equivalent of .2 sp from my experience .  and its easy to explain that way i guess...  Thanks RR

Great, blower it is.
Does anyone know where I can find this blower ( http://www.fungi.com/product-detail/product/universal-blower-1040-cfm-8-sp.html ) or equivalent for a cheaper price?

That's about what they cost.  Did you check graingers?

A lot of guys grab a free one from the boneyard behind a local heat and air shop.  Most furnace blowers have squirrel cage blowers that will handle a flowhood.

Is there any way to search graingers with a filter for specific CFM minimum at 0.8" static pressure? Without that I'm finding myself going from unit to unit! ah!

seems like I'd have to go for this: dayton PSC blower 12G810 1200 CFM http://www.grainger.com/product/DAYTON-PSC-Blower-12G810?functionCode=P2IDP2PCP

temPSC Blower #12G810
Wheel Dia. (In.)8-1/4
Wheel Width (In.)5-1/4
CFM @ 0.000-In. SP1202
CFM @ 0.100-In. SP1170
CFM @ 0.200-In. SP1150
CFM @ 0.300-In. SP1140
CFM @ 0.400-In. SP1120
CFM @ 0.500-In. SP1100
CFM @ 0.600-In. SP1080
CFM @ 0.700-In. SP1075
CFM @ 0.800-In. SP1040

1040 CFM @ 0.8 In. SP should be ~800+ at 1.2 In. SP... might that be a bit overpowered for the ~600 that I need to get good laminar flow?

I haven't found a blower yet that is lower powered than that while still giving acceptable CFM values! The model below it (12G809) offers 990 CFM  (640 @ 0.7 In SP)

there is also model 1TDU2 with similar values yet cheaper.(& only $241 + S/H from sears.com)

AHHH!

Is an inline fan really that poor of a choice compared to a blower?

update: success achieved! http://mushroompatch.com/building_a_professional_flowhood.htm scaled to accommodate 3x2 filter. ~14" plenum w/ 3/4" birch plywood, fungiperfecti's 36x24x5.8 filter and dayton 1TDU2 blower. ~$330 (filter) + ~$240 (blower) + ~$80 (plywood + milling time)+ ~$60 in misc hardware (silicone, wood glue, nails, cobalt drill bit, screws, power cable, power strip, 12"x12" prefilter) = ~$700 and build time.

thank you everyone for all the help! I am so very grateful.

Hello all,

Just joined the forum as I noticed this place had a great number of posts related to laminar flow hood... and I am planning on building my own one.

I have the same problem: what blower to buy for my specific HEPA area? I planned on using the same 1TDU2 from Dayton because the blower curve shows this one can still be used at static pressure as high as 1.5" (great when the HEPA starts to get a little old); the other blowers tend to be in the unstable zone around 0.8/1.0" SP (extra noise...). But I want to limit my area to 24x24 in so an area of 4 square foot.

With HEPA and prefilter I would expect a 1" SP and hoping for a 150 foot/min after the HEPA I would need (4*150) a blower with 600 cfm at 1" SP... THE 1TDU2 would provide 975 cfm.

IS THIS TOO MUCH? WILL THE HEPA FILTER BE DESTROYED?
CAN I PUT ADJUSTABLE SIDE VENTS (BEFORE THE HEPA and AFTER THE BOWLER) TO REDUCE THE CFM #?

Also, the 1TDU2 does not come with mounting brackets... How do you set this up safely?

Hope some of you will read and would be able to help.
Cheers
