am I the only one who realizes that the reason we're mostly surrounded by people telling us that everything will "work out is" because the only ones still around are those for whom things worked out ? I mean how many stores of abject despair that end in disaster do u hear ? those people arn't around to tell their tales... I mean from an evolutionary perspective people will *always* be surrounded by those for whom things "worked out"... Just the apparentness of the Bell curve that people seem to commpletely miss.... wish I could eloborate this damn machbine is fubared...
sorry if it sounds pessimistic - but I don't mean it that way, it just seems like such an apparent fact to me...

most of the people I know who have had things not work out for them were people who believed that things werent going to work out for them.

i.e I wasn't refering to the attitudes of people for whom things didn't work out.... anyone familiar with strict logic here understand what I'm trying to say in my original post ?

Ex-fucking-xactly!
Our thoughts create our state of mind, which creates our experiences.. Someone that doesn't think that anything will work out for them will not go about setting out and accomplishing the things they need to do for "things to work out for them"...
I mean, it is all about outlook. I mean, if someone won't get off the couch because nothing will work out for them in their minds, they aren't even doing anything that has the possibillity of working out for them. And if they do get off the couch and are faced with a minor setback, it is just validating their belief, isn't it?
I mean, someone who has something to work towards and is really optimistic and will keep clawing their way to get there, they will do whatever is necessary and more to get there, because it is all within their possibillites, there are no doubts in their mind.. and if they are faced with a minor setback, it certainly doesn't make them crawl up on the couch and turn on the television...
We concern ourselves with what we want, we make our own path, and the only thing we can do is go about walking down it.. Peace.

Well, if you turn on the news you will hear only stories of disaster and despair, more or less. You seldom hear about a former gang member who had a sudden insight and turned away from crime, for example, even though it should be a great cause for celebration every time this happens.
And if you listen to successful people who explain the reason for their success, you'll hear lots of stories that say "well, if you work very hard to become successful you will be successful one day, because that's how I became successful, yes indeed".
Why do we cling to the advice of these people? It's not because they have any better and more objective perspective than we do. It's because of the offhand chance that they might have some unkown quality that correlates with success, and that by listening to them, some of it will rub off on us.

What do you want, Hitler to come back and tell us how his plan to dominate the world did'nt fucking work out. We have people who make it and people who dont, Do you really think you're going to get anywhere surrounded by people telling you things just dont work out in life? No, fuck them! They failed! It's your turn to try! If it works out, great! If it doesent just shut up and do drugs, dont bring down the next generation telling them what a failure you were and how happiness is only an illusion, with all that pessamistic shit, who wants to hear that??? Not me, why am i so angry!!!!

The setting is gloomy of course. To this day, Hitler's failures get a lot more media exposure than Mother Theresa's successes.
