oysters on logs (pics)
    #1955718 - 09/26/03 08:54 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

my logs are finally starting to produce and i thought i'd share these pics with everybody.  The logs just had pins on them 4 days ago and then i saw them today and i was like  .These logs were completely dormant all summer long and then we finally got rain for the first time in about 4 months(an extremely dry summer for BC(they say the driest in 40 years or something)) but then after 3 days of rain , they came back to life and it has been very rewarding.

Very nice indeed.

What is the species that you got the logs from?
Where'd you incubate them before fruitng?
What inoculation method did you use?

Thanks for the compliments everybody.
It has basically been 1 year in the works. I incubated them last year around this time and I put them outside in the spring. The wood is a type of cottonwood. I read that oysters particularily grow very well on it.
I originally started out with a bag of sawdust spawn that i bought from somebody that sells it locally here and i was able to incubate about 10 logs from it. They were put in a storage shed outside. I would say it took about 5 or 6 months for them to fully colonize until the mycelium covered the entire outside of the log. Once the mycelium started to spread and expand I was able to take some and make my own spawn. I went from wbs in jars ---> straight red alder sawdust and this colonized very well.
I will take more pictures next flush! I still have about 7 others logs that i'm waiting on to start producing.

Very cool!

Perhaps you could help induce fruiting by dunking the other logs in water overnight?
