salt for humidity?
    #1957580 - 09/27/03 05:38 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

ive heard of using salt to calibrate hydrometers, and the salt keeps a nice 75% humidity, anyone use salt to keep there terrarium humid? seems kinda ideal if you ask me perlite will keep stuff at 100 but salt stays at 75 seems to me like a cup of salt, and like maybe 1/8th cup of water or so should be great for ones setup. wet salt isnt gonna mold right stupid question but i think this should replace some perlite for casing chambers. this is for growing casings only

no no, you throw your hydrometer in a bag with a teaspoon of salt and a few drops of water in a bottle cap and it stabilizes at 75%, read the faq its in there.

i want 75% this requires no perlite, no pumps no coolmists, no timers, just me checkin on it once or twice a day to fan and give a light spray and keeping the humidity up. 75 is almost perfect for casings id say. im just going for a lazier way of doing things, bc with several roughnecks goin and those noisy ass bublers. i want it simpler. so no one here thinks salt would be a good way to maintain a 75% humidity? thats all i care about if you dont see the benefits i dont wanna argue just curious what people think about it working or not. ill be the judge of the practicality

If you have a digital hygrometer all you need is a drastic drop in humid. Keep it at this for an hour then put it in terrarium. This works for me.

hi, longtime lurker. not totally relevant to the thread but saves starting a new one. i thought to add sea salt to a koolaid/terrarium set up, to inhibit bacteria etc. what i got, as well, was perfectly uniform growth; my assumption here is that large aqmounts of naturally produced negative ions neutralise any co2 that is produced. i know salt is a desiccant, but i gather that in solution, this attribute is irrelevant. i reckon you could possibly do the same with a humidifier set up. one drawback with salt humidified air is that it rusts metal.

and wouldn't adding h2o2 to water create an over-abundance of positive ions? acidic air being the enemy...
