casing never colonised

My freinds casing never colonised but it fruited anyways what was the point of even casing / how did this happen it was in the dark and got barly any oxygen.....he noticed a pin on top of the verm and the

Verm casings generally do not colonize too well, or rather whispy. The point of casing is not to colonize it but to give moisture to your precious ones. However, if the mycelium is burried under a bunch of casing it will, generally, not fruit (depending on how thick the casing is). Therefore, there should be some mycelium allowed to creep through to the top. This will also allow some time for the mycelium to grow back together after breaking up.

If the casing layer is too colonized (overlay) then the casing becomes pointless. There must be some uncolonize parts to allow moisture to soak in. Otherwise you will just see a puddle of water on top of the overlay.
