For most plant cultivations there are no "teks" like there are mushrooms.

Dont try and over complicate things by looking for poppy growing teks.  Just find a patch of bare earth, they like soil that is a bit on the poor side (which is good cause then you dont have to add anything to it) just loosen the dirt sprinkle the poppy seeds and then cover it with a very very thin layer of dirt (you can use a sifter to make the dirt really fine) After that keep the your poppy patch somewhat moist. Then in a week or two you will see baby poppy plants, thin these out to 6" apart when they get a bit bigger. Oh yeah plant your poppys either right now or first thing in the spring when the frost is over.

and there you go :smirk:

PERSONALLY

I would prepare the "LOT" he speaks of with my own mix, poppies CAN grow anywhere almost, but treat them well and they will grow VERY NICE

How many plants do you think one could cultivate in a 600 ft2 plot? Based on the '93 DEA pamphlet, I'm thinking ~6-700.

Don't worry about counting numbers, it's unit fill. That's a clump of poppy at 2" to 3" tall the size of your fist from a seed tray planted 600mm x 600mm grid space. They do best as group plantings and not as individuals as they have an allopathic response on (weed) competition.

Thanks Starter:

I am still curious about your predictions as to actual plant numbers vis-a-vis a quantified amount of land.

Started the thread, but yet to add more pics & text.

But basically, if you plant every 2ft (600mm) grid space a clump the size of your fist from a seed tray at 3" tall, they'll fill the entire bed up and shade out weeds below, provided you use a mulch like straw. It not only keeps weeds at bay, it increases soil life (worms), retains soil moisture and it keeps the poppy roots cool. Cool roots are a must!!

I wouldn't plant 8" apart, that's like broadcast and they simply strangle one another and never get big.
