inoculating tupperwares
    #1956683 - 09/27/03 07:43 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I would like to ask if somebody know or have used, whith PF technique, tupperwares (1,5 ltrs. for example) bigger than typical pint jars and how does it works. Quantity of ml. of spores to inoculate...
Thank you

It takes much much longer to colonize, regardless if you use a bigger amount of spore suspension for inoculation.
In this case, smaller is better.

i've used pyrex baking dishes before. you just need to put more inoculation points in it. also, depending on the size of your container, you will likely have inoc points that aren't along the sides so you might not catch a contam until you birth your big ol cake. as long as the container isn't too deep (no more than 2.5", id say), colonization shouldn't take any longer than usual, provided sufficient inoc points.

interesting question regarding big cakes... Could I take a big pyrex dish (with an airtight lid)... follow pf tek but instead of using jars... just load the dish with a ton of substrate and innoculate liberally all over. Once it is colonized... could you apply a casing layer to the huge colonized cake, coldshock and birth? Is this not a good Idea? I have had no trouble with contamination as of yet (fingers crossed). Is this pushing it? Worth a try? Essentially you would just be making a casing witout having to break up the cakes after colonization. I know this is a huge possiblity for contamination anyway. SO I guess my real quesiton is... What is more likely induce contams.... taking the risk with one big cake and not much more exposure to contams... or taking the risk breaking up the cakes and casing them the usual way?

A FOAF has a 1.6 pint rubbermaid colonizing with PESA He innoculated 10 points on it with 1 cc of spores at each point and it is running just as good as any of his jars have. He says go for it

innernaut- sounds good to me. the pyrex's i've seen were about 8 cup (big). also, i've had more difficulties with crumbling than casing whole, so like AM says, go for it!
