something is eating into my lopho!
    #1956122 - 09/27/03 01:54 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

hello people from all around the planet!
it started looking like wounds (orangish, you know), now i've got a crater on its side and a couple half millimeter wide holes around. the cactus is not soft anywhere and there's no chance of rodents around (cat guards).
any idea about what it might be?
i am thinking of making a surgery or graft + exploratory surgery, i'd be happy if i could save at least it's top or root.
oh, BTW just by chance could it be centipodes? sometimes i see a few around...
any help is much appreciated!

i'd probably rub it with alcohol, scrape out a few mm of flesh all around the crater, swab with alcohol again and maybe throw some salt in it.

"the cactus is not soft anywhere and there's no chance of rodents around (cat guards)"

Maybe it's the cats? I once caught mine chewing on a 10+ year old one. :mad2: :nonono: :mad2:

Although the marks from that were quite obviously bite marks, I think if that is what is happening to yours then it would be obvious, so it probably isn't, so I'll just shut up now...

At least it shows that my cat has good taste! :mushroom2: :nut:

hi psilocybeingzz, i remember that! i told you!

openminded: i'm sure my cats are not biting them, lol!
i expected something like nematodes or larvas from that couple tiny holes but i've not seen even that.

grasshoppers? i've not seen one in years! cats eat them too.

i think i'll do it like neuro said, remove the whole area, get it clean, etc...
can't be bad.
and throw away that evil soil from that vase!

thanks everybody for the attention and the inputs!!!

hi fellows!
today i sterilized my knife with alcohol and proceeded to cut out the ever growing crater on the side of my poor loph, and check out what was going on inside.
there was a chamber, a nest, or something grown in the lophos flesh! its inhabitant was long gone i concluded as i opened it!
i took off the least possible flesh out of the little loph but the damage was almost as thick as a rib. i hope it heals fine...
i hate when bugs put their eggs in my cacti. if it was a columnar one i wouldn't really care but a globular slow growing one! damn bugs!
