ny question. religion and growing
    #19560915 -

I'm asatru and live in western ny, if they were to lessen the laws of cannabis, could I use my religious rights the same way people are using rastafarianism to not be seized by the government? I ask because I love my views and see rasta as afrocentric and completely unrelatable. Any feed back is vary appreciated, thank you for your time and I hope you've charmed your plow.

In a brief search, I cant find where Rastafarianism is on the list of religions recognized by the Federal or NY State Governments. I don't see how it could work if it isn't a recognized religion.

I may be missing information to the contrary. My initial recommendation would be to determine if your religion is recognized or not. If so, proving it is a totally different subject which I would have no opinion on.

I'm seeing a lot of documentary's from this year where growers are claiming to convert to rasta in the US an being seized less do to there religious rights, and I'm sure there bolth recognized because rastas don't have to shave there locks in prison maybe because of freedom of religion idk.. but they also have allowed asatru followers to wear Thors silver hammer http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mj%C3%B6lnir pendent while incarcerated, there's also been a Thors hammer symbol added to the military symbols and, the pentagram has been added for wiccan.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%81satr%C3%BA_in_the_United_States - asatru wiki page

http://m.state.gov/md5566.htm - rasta is not even recognized in the US :frown:.  But there's this http://www.ndsn.org/march96/9thcirc.html

So after the Google-few it seems asatru is recognized while rasta is not yet I see people claiming rasta and claiming to be seized less yet its not recognized in the US... And asatru only has symbols for vet's and there beliefs.  Maybe I'm missing somthing on freedom of religion.

What are you talking about?  You aren't going to get any special cannabis dispensation and the neither are the Rastas.

Currently there is only one group of people, one substance, allowed an exemption under the Freedom of Religion Act. It is the NAC (Native American Church) and they are allowed to use Peyote.

The above are right, if it's not a recognized and exempted religion it doesn't matter. Otherwise anyone would be able to say that any substance is part of their religion. Someone could go and say that part of their religion is drinking poppy pod tea and have all their members drink it during church.

This is correct.  The most important thing to remember about this, however, is that this is an accommodation made by Congress.  This is not based on a First Amendment right.  If OP can convince congress to give him a pass, more power to him.

That's completely irrelevant to anything being discussed in this thread.
