To retape or not to retape, that is the question.
    #1956029 - 09/26/03 11:04 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Hey folks, A FOAF of mine has one little jar that was just slowly moving along. He removed the tape from one of the holes, placed a coffee filter over the lid, and screwed the ring back on.

After only two days the results were GREAT! Stronger growth, and it's moving along alot faster. Now the question, Should he leave the jar as is, or should he now retape the hole to keep the jar from drying out? What should he do?

I haven't taped mine and drying out is not a problem (water builds up on the insides but dry out? nah). The top verm layer should be enough to keep contams out... let the air flow. Coffee filter if you like but tape is useful i think only for keeping out contams before first signs of growth. After that I want my babies to get as much air as they possibly can get. but that is just me... maybe i'm a gambler.

if you are planning to dunk and roll(and by all accounts, you should), then this is a moot point to _some_ degree.

you said yourself, the results were great without the tape.
it'll obviously colonize faster without the tape
which is the main goal in colonization, do it as fast as you can.
this is to make sure nothing else can compete with the mycelium for the uncolonized substrate.

now this is why the drying out is a moot point for a dunk and roll...
assuming it doesnt dry out _before_ 100% colonization (which is unlikely from just a couple holes), you're going to rehydrate it when you dunk it anyway. so long as it stays within the parameters of safe moisture content for colonization, it wont matter how dry it is when its finally done colonizing.

I like to leave the tape on for the first two weeks then take it off and they usually finish up in about another week, but I?m buzzed what do I know.

Are you removing the tape after a certain level of growth or does the tape come off after two weeks no matter were the mycelium is in it's development?
Thanks!

Oh man, oh man, my :wink:FOAF  slow jar is lookin GREAT!! After removing the tape from only one hole, and placing a coffee filter over the lid, the growth in the jar has increased by 2/3s in just 4 days.

Only the bottom left to go.....Thanks again everyone.

Magash and others:

Do you rubber band the coffee filters on after removing the tape? I assume flipping the jar is neither desired nor needed if you remove tape and put on the coffee filter, eh? Tomorrow morning will be two weeks for mine, so I guess I'll go with this...

The filter is not needed. I use it mainly just as a dust cover.

All this talk! It makes me excited for my FOAF's jars! He messed up a couple of jar because he was unfamiliar with a PC, so they were a little over wet, but even they are doing alright!

The spore solution drips down the side of the jar...
