We get posts with that underwater Psathyrella approximately once a month. It's been going around for years now.
Cool one nonetheless!

The first mention of this species I can find is  here but the article is missing,
The species must have first been documented around January of 2008.

Have you noticed that there is an air bubble around the gills in all these pictures?- I wonder if it serves any function
Wouldn't the spores only go downstream? Next time I'm in the area I'll try to find some of these. I hope I can get a picture without an underwater camera.

Just spitballing, but perhaps the bubbles protect the gills from the water so that immature spores and basidia aren't washed away.  Could also be to allow the spores to be ejected.

I think that is the reason I recall reading, but I can't remember where right now.  Probably in the article that described it.

Yes, but this species also fruits outside of water.  No one has ever found it there, but when cultivated in the lab, this species looks like Psathyrella gracilis.

I've invited one of the coauthors of the P. aquatica paper to the spring shroomery gathering, hope he makes it.  He went a couple years ago.

I didn't know it had already been cultivated!  Is there any chance there was a write up on the grow?

There's an article in the latest FungiMag about bugs dispersing the spores. I think they mentioned the gas bubbles in there too but I can't remember why exactly.

I figured the air bubbles were like that water spider that keeps a bubble to breath in on his abdomen.  the fungi just "breaths"/absorbs the oxygen it needs through the myc network that makes up the fruitbody..  just speculation on my part though.

He told me he had a paper in publication about the cultivation of Psathyrella aquatica a couple years ago, I haven't seen it yet.

From here:

"Water constrains spore dispersal. Spores were observed as wedge-shaped rafts released into a gas pocket under the cap."
