Casing
    #1943780 - 09/23/03 09:14 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Over the past few weeks my friend's dog has been reading about casing. Alot about casing. Just out of curiosity, for the first time casing, what would be the best casing mix? The dog has noticed good results on posts from millet, alien substrate, among others. He needs something easy (because he has no thumbs) but something that will yield more than cakes.... thanks.

casing mix and millet? You got something mixed up here...
Anyways: Good Substrates (The stuff the mycelium grows in) - Rye, Millet , BRF, Pop-Corn, Straw, Dung etc...

Good Casings(Stuff you put on top):50/50 Tek, Straight Peat Moss, Straight Verm.

Oh , and I noticed, that you obviously didnt read the FAQ, right?! (Just admit it! )

Hope I could help,
    Jazz

Actually I have read the faq... I wrote that post when I was groggy this morning. I have heard that vermiculite doesn't work well as a casing by itself... What I'm wanting to know is which casing method will enduce the highest yield?

I noticed in the FAQ that there is no mention of needing to lower the PH... so I take it no limestone, etc is needed when using coco coir/verm? thanks...

Btw: out of curiosity, can you buy litmus paper at a home-depot or k-mart type store?

dunno what that is...
Limestone: I dont use it. You're fine without. (Maybe it maximises flushes, but it really works without)

Limestone or oyster shells are used to lower the acidity in casing layers like peat... I don't know what the acidity level in the 60/40 coco/verm is...

One more casing question. The jars my friend was going to use for the substrate in the casing has colonized the jars 100% + 2 days. Although, the temperature has been 75F. I know that this just slows down the colonization proccess. Although, I know that the temperature needs to be lowered to 76 to initiate pinnning. Will this be a problem to a casing? Since the temperature isn't really changing much, and my friend doens't have the $ to build an incubator to raise the temperature of the casing to 85F, does this pose a problem? And if so how can he avoid it as cheaply as possible?

You mean to lower the acidity, which would be to risen the pH.

And, there is mention in the FAQ of the need to do this.

Ok... he cased those cakes with sterilized verm... The prob is that he can't get an incubator constructed for a few days (payday). Is this a huge problem? They are resting between 70-80F. Will this have drastic negative effects on getting the babies to fruit?
