If anything, I feel like psychedelic drugs help keep me sane.
-------------------- relax ...but that was many years from now and, i hope from here on out i always seem to want to shout your eyes are like a cup of tea, ascend into the sun with me...

In the cases where that has happened there is no evidence that they were not already bearing some mental issues.
To me it just looks like a lot of people lack the mental fortitude to deal with a relatively benign experience
I'm not trying to rail you, you seem like a good dude... I just think this mentality kind of ruins the credibility of science in many cases. Sure, nothing can be hard science without concrete evidence... But even those practicing in the field realize there is a level of phenomenal experience which is impossible for any kind of quantitative or direct qualitative analysis. At least with our current understanding. Without knowing the molecular mechanisms for HPPD it is impossible to say anything certain about it at all. But it's also a little ludicrous to deny it's existence due to lack of observable evidence when you're regarding something that can't even be observed by an objective source. It's okay to be a rational being and hold beliefs so long as they are rational. And to believe in the potential to disturb ones neurochemical balance by bombarding it with extremely powerful drugs is a pretty rational belief to have. It seems a tad less realistic to view something like hppd as some kind of widespread conspiracy.
That being said, there is no "proof" for either side. You're right. But it's not too hard to assume. I've even heard of accounts of HPPD from hallucinogen fanatics. People who handle their shit extremely well. People who would have no business making up stories to scare anyone. Mrjynxx is one that comes to mind.

everytime you access your subconscious there is the risk of serious problems
trips let you do just that, but therapy can do it too
we all got something unpleasant hidden away, don't dive to deep too often
you might still be able to function, a scarred psyche will be hidden, you might not notice till years afterwards
but self-reflection is dependent on dose, setting, set if you trip with others there won't be as much of it
alone trips usually are more intense/more to deal with afterwards
so it is only logical it can take a toll on your sanity
there is no gain without pain, everything you gain will be very unpleasant first you have to resolve all the problems within yourself, can take years/be very unpleasant but worth it afterwards often
more love, less fears - but until then it can take a small toll on your sanity/large toll (depending on how you trip/how often etc)
if you go too deep into your subconscious you might not be ready to see what's hidden away you hide stuff from yourself because you are not ready to deal with it viewing it all at once can be very taxing on the psyche/take years to heal

I think if psyches are continuously abused, then they can certainly have a negative effect on a person. Sanity isn't a very good word choice though, because like you said in the OP how can one define being sane? I would just say abusing almost any substance can have some serious backlash, and psychs are no different.

by tripping you accept that small risk :-) usually it heals, but not always... sometimes the trip scars and you have to heal after the trip
