lighting with christmas lights?
    #1954938 - 09/26/03 05:54 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I know you can use Christmas lights for a light source. But I was wondering am I wanting to use, the white Christmas light or the multi colored ones? or does it even matter? If somebody can tell me which is better to use I would appreciate it.

use the white ones. colored does matter, as red and green lights are unassertive to the matter. any other color will work just fine. it has been found on rare occasions that albinos will form with florecent and colors heavy in blue.

i don't know about white and blue light causing albinos, but blue spectrum light has been proved to be beneficial to fruit body growth.

agreeing with everyone, white seems the best choice
unless theres some blue and white alternating?
i bet the cakes/casing would love that
if it'd even matter =/

Yeah it's always cool having those shimmering lights around for a trip anyhow... you walk into a room and the lights are shimmering and everything is right in the world.

today i went to home depot to check out things
nothing on the list, just wanted to browse for ideas and such...you know how it goes.

anyway, in lighting i came across some light tubes, some might be familiar with them, long ropes of tiny light, the light inside the tube, the tube itself is plastic. i wish i could explain them better, or give a real life example of the ones im talking about, but hopefully someone knows.

so upon seeing them, some ideas start going thru my mind

first and foremost, what the temperature of the light tube is
ive heard people say that chirstmas lights can produce some heat in the terrarium, sometimes too much (or too much for comfort for some).
i checked, and while it did have some heat coming off it, it didnt seem to be any more than a naked chirstmas light bulb would put off...it is insulated with a plastic hose/tube thing afterall.

secondly, what colors they had (the plastics are colored, lights all the same inside im sure)
they had the typical white, red, and voila...some pretty blue ones.

next, how much light output they had
they're by no means used for ambient room light, more like something along someones sidewalk to guide them to the door at night (thats the example i was thinking of)
in other words, they're pretty dim, id say dimmer than christmas tree lights.

so what does this incredibly long and drawn out post mean to people?

if you're a stealth grower, dim lights that wouldnt illuminate much else other than the cakes

if you're an automated kinda person, the lights appear to be submersible to some degree, so they could easily be kept inside a humid terrarium without worry of electrical shock or fires.

ill stop rambling and simply end it with this: sorry if this idea has already been stated elsewhere.

yea...i found that an 18" flourescent 15w light put out less heat than a string of multicolored christmas lights. so i'd say go with a flourescent light if possible
