Mycelium, Mycelium, Mycelium.

I have bought a grow kit. This is all I have been getting. It's been a week now. The top layer of the grow kit cake is covered in Mycelium. We're not pinning yet. Now I did cover the holes of the chamber with cotton wool to increase humidity a bit. However I have removed the cotton wool now in hope of decreasing the humidity. Thus initiate pinning. I was thinking of taking the lid off the plastic box (it's a plastic storage box and a lid, with 1cm holes drilled all around the edges of the top lid) and fanning it a bit. Good idea? I don't want to contaminate it and fanning it with the lid could be asking for this.
So your thoughts please good people.
PS My next project, is to start from the beginning. That should be fun.

how often are you fanning? What are the temps, and where are you getting humidity?. If you're fanning too often your humidity may be too low. The whole drop humidity is not that drastic. You don't want to drop it in the 80s or anything.

Ok here we go some pictures http://www.geocities.com/chrispche/ the temp is about 24C - 27C. I havn't been fanning it for fear of contamination. This link will probably work better. http://www22.brinkster.com/enosys/shroomkit/

just my opinion, but it looks like overlay to me. I'm not sure but the close-up pics look like they might have some pinheads on the sides. Normally you don't want the mycelium to colonize the casing that way. You may be able to throw some moist verm on it to save it, but I am no expert n ovrelayed casings. Does anyone else agree? Let's help this guy out!

That casing does not look overlayed (yet) but it is definitely over colonized. Time to fruit that bad boy! If you read the FAQ you will find that air exchange (fresh air) is one of the precursors to pinning, and so is HIGH humidity. Start fanning!

man, give that sucker some air. to my knowledge they need air and when well colonized you need not worry so much about contams.
also get that pic of yourself off the web. no need to advertise.

It's not illegal in the UK. I'm breaking no law. Good isn't it. Have a look at http://www.magic-mushrooms.net/ it has a letter from a UK politician explaining all this.

The mycelium looks wet as if the condensation is dripping off the lid onto it, which is bad... try putting something over it to deflect the drips. It'll never pin if thats happening and wouldn't be suprised if you get cobweb mold growing on it.

"It's not illegal in the UK. I'm breaking no law." Just incase you UK people didn't know, it is true. It only becomes illegal if they are dried.

Looks similar. What do you think from the close ups? It's very difficult to tell. Does it smell different? My grow chamber has the typical mushroom smell.

Does not look like overlay to me, but its getting a bit heavy. I notice you are using an incandescent light bulb, this is far from the ideal wavelength to initiate pinning, you need something more towards the blue, try getting a florescent bulb. And change the air 3-4 times a day by fanning. Oh and whats the temp. inside there? I notice its on top of a fridge, over the heat exchanger, it maybe too warm. PS: I live around London, drop me a PM if you want to trade spores.

Actually I live in Ilford. Don't know if thats close to you. I have actually lowered the temp for today by taking it away from the heat source. I shall return it tonight and heat it up again. This is in hope of cold shocking. I'll give it fan every few times a day. Oh and what about an energy bulb? Would that have the right spectrum?
