Keep it warm and dark. Dont let it colonize all the way THROUGH to the top..once you see mycelium poke through anywhere, you should start "birthing" it. While its colonizing, dont give it any fresh air the entire time...so when i "birht" it, its at a cooler temp, bout 10 degrees, constant fresh filtered air (fishtank air pump), 12 hours of light (incandescent bulb), all at once. You should start to see SMALL pins within a week. IMO, you shouldnt let the casing have any (or very little) fresh air WHILE colonizing. Then after colonizing, fresh air is probably THE most crucial thing to initiate pinning.

wait..a minute...
why is it bad to let the mycelium colonize all the way to the top????
isn't that what it's suppose to do????

i was reading my TMC and it said that one should just sprinkle casing on the spots where mycelium gets to the top first...

is that correct????

You shouldn't let it colonize to the top cuz overlay can occur and you won't get the most out of your work. Put it in the terrarium when you can barely see the mycilium poking into the bottom of the casing.

my casings have been put directly in the terranium right after casing it..

that's wut TMC said...
should i take them out...
