Carbon monoxide warning from pressure cooker?
    #19523914 - 02/05/14 06:52 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

After pressure cooking for about an hour the shrieking carbon monoxide alarm started going off in my apartment.  It's a pretty small studio, and I'm afraid of waking up all the neighbors in the building.  I opened the window and turned on all the fans and the alarm went off.

Then it started going off again a few minutes later.  I shut it off again and it just would turn on all over in a few seconds.  I can't take the batteries out of this thing, so I had to abort the operation.

What's the deal with this?  Is this an overly-sensitive alarm or am I slowly dying as I type this?  And will my grains that were only cooked for an hour be okay to use?

Do you have a gas stove?  If not it was something else that set off the alarm.  Even if you do have gas I wouldn't think cooking for an hour would set off any alarm.

Dude, that should not happen. Send the pc back IMO. And no, your grains aren't quite finished. But I wouldn't keep trying if it's setting off the CO detector

It is a gas stove, but the alarm went off when I turned it off.  I can't think of what else would cause it but I don't know how the pressure cooker could cause co2.

Tell the landlord to replace a defective CO detector.  It shouldn't sound when you cook unless your gas stove has a yellow flame.  If so, simply adjust the air shutter to the burners until you have a blue flame.

Yup, this should not happen.

But sometimes it does, and kills people. So check your CO alarm (or get it checked).

Stay safe bro!

Regarding the grains: 90 minute is the de-facto standard, but you might get lucky.

That's scary, I bet it's your stove.

Seeing as a PC can't make CO it's not your PC. It's either the flame burning without enough oxygen IE yellow flame, or something else like the stove

Like above users stated, PC won't actually emit CO, but could send false signals. I've heard that some cleaning chemicals leave a residual that has set off CO detectors. And cooking with a cheap pan has even set off my own CO in the past (smelt funny now that I think about it) to the point that I used another pan, and it was fine. Needless to say, I chunked that shit!

Or it could just be batteries. Or a faulty CO detector altogether. And I'm praying that you weren't just releasing CO into the house; this isn't your first time working with a gas stove is it?

But if you get a repeat after the landlord visit, may want to check with the manufacturer just to be on the safe side. :goodluck:

I've had my CO detector go off while pressure cooking before.

Put some new batteries in it and haven't had it go off since.
