the news source you cite says that the polls have been contradictory and questionable.
here is a little info about the gallup organization and some specific details about the poll in iraq. if there is any legitimate reason to question its accuracy, i'd like to hear it:

There's not. The poll doesn't reflect the Guardian's leftist view point so they are trying to discredit it.

yep, and unfortunately, alot of their leftist readership will accept their statement without digging any deeper because it reaffirms their beliefs. exhibit A: alex.

not really. it's just a concern of mine. i don't feel bad about what we did. it wasn't wrong. it was just stupid.
Thats a very kind way of looking at it! Do you think that the US people were lied to and manipulated in any way to garner their support for this little mistake?

yeah... so i guess that part was wrong...
ok... american politicians lied to american people to get american taxpayers to pay to send american companies and american troops to liberate and rebuild iraq.
sucks for us americans, great for those iraqis, why do any of you care? if you're concerned about this out of sheer compassion, how about a little for us americans eh? we're the ones who really got screwed here.

My problem is only with our governments, remember we in the UK have spent a fair bit in this war ourselves and all we've got to show for it is a hike in the price of petrol and an increase in our council tax!!
I agree that the Iraqi people will probabaly benefit in the long run. Although I think to say this was the most intelligent way of helping them is wrong. I also wonder how long it will take for the Iraqi's to get back to the standard of living they enjoyed before the first gulf war.

Iraq were told by April Gillespie that the US had no interest in arab-arab conflict shortly before Iraq invaded Kuwait.
Thank you.

i'm aware of that. so what? as you correctly pointed out, the US is not the worlds policeman. nor are we the world's government or its moral authority. asking us for "permission" to do something is ridiculous. april gillespie is not king of the world. after the invasion, the US's position on arab-arab conflict was reversed quite sharply, and this was certainly made known to hussein. at that point, he did not pull his troops out. instead he kept them there for 5 months, in spite of international outcry, until finally it was decided that force would have to be used. if iraq's invasion of kuwait was contigent upon "permission" from the united states, it's rather curious that he didn't call it off when the US, amidst the company of the international community, did a 180 degree turn around after he invaded, sharply criticizing the attack and threatening military action. "told him he could invade kuwait"... jeeze... does the idea that april gillespie has authority to grant iraq permission to invade kuwait sound ridiculous to anyone else, or is it just me?

Does the idea that a government official goes around advising Sovereign nations off her own back without being advised by her government sound ridiculous to anyone??

Not really curious at all. Before he invaded he would more than likely have listened if he had been made aware of the consequences. However once he had invaded there is no way someone like Hussein could be seen to be obeying anyone.
And to say " the US's position on arab-arab conflict was reversed quite sharply" is just a nice way of saying the US double crossed Hussein, an ally of theirs for several years.
