Can I just dump verm on my cakes?
    #1951393 - 09/25/03 04:45 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

My cakes are pinning pretty well, getting bigger every hour, but one of them is quite slow, and another isn't pinning at all. What would sprinkling verm on my cakes do? Will it make them grow faster? Grow more?

That would help yes because the verm would hold moisture. You don't want to add too much that it is blocking light and fruit won't be able to grow through it though. Your cakes are fruiting now meaning they most likely won't colonize any verm you throw on it too quickly. After first flush sprinkle some moist verm on the top. If you are a bit paranoid you could moisten it with hydrogen peroxide.

I had wonderd about rolling cakes in too much verm, maybe that's the problem I'm having with mine. I don't roll them in fine verm, I use the stuff I used in the substrate. Maybe it's blocking out all my light.

If the mycelium colonizes the verm you add then you're golden.

ok, thanks. I recently had a 2nd flush and they stopped fruiting. I was just going to call them good after dunking and rolling once, but now I see why people dunk between flushes. Pinning started again 2 days after I decided to dunk a second time. The mycelium does try to colonize the verm so I think I'll keep doing it this way. One thing I've noticed though is that the fruits like to grow from either the top or bottom of my cakes, and never the sides.
