Plastic Barrels For Lime Pasteurization

Hi,
I have some 55 gallon plastic barrels, but I'm not sure if they are safe or not to use for mushroom production.
some of the barrels were used to store dead chickens. I was thinking I could fill them with ~0.12% bleach water for a few days before use? (commercially sold bleach is ~7%, so 1 gallon of bleach per 55 gallons of water = 0.12% bleach water)
Some of the barrels were used for storing acids. The acids were used to treat some sort of material in the context of raising chickens. I know acids react with bases, which is of concern given I'll be using the lime pasteurization. I am thinking I should just rinse the hell out of them then give it a go outdoors in case of a reaction.
opinions?

i wouldn't use a barrel that once contained dead chickens, for anything! I would be less concerned with the acid barrels.

I wouldn't be worried about using the barrels that contained acid. The lime will neutralize any residues and it isn't going to be a violent reaction. The dead chicken drums...yuck. I am sure they can be cleaned up with chlorine but...that is just nasty.

Check craigslist local. We got a bunch of 55 gallon drums food grade for about $30 each. We used the 55 gallon steel drums for pasteurizing and they run about the same.

What are you talking about when you say dead chickens? It this like post processing before packaging? Or just a pile of dead rottin whole chickens in some guys basement? If they were just used for processing or transport sure there fine as we have "dead chickens" in plastic containers all the time that we wash an reuse for all kinds of things.

My friend has a chicken farm. He simply told me they were used for dead chickens. I'll ask him for specifics next time I see him.
I know it's disgusting, but then again bleach kicks ass...My question is whether it kicks ass well enough to rid any health concerns posed by possible pathogens to mushrooms of humans which might remain in those barrels.

Bleach will kill everything in the barrel like bacteria and stuff.
I would fill up the barrel with water add the bleach and let it sit for a day or two. Then take out the bleach water and rinse the heck out of the barrel. Wipe it clean with a cloth or rag and refill the barrel with cold water and let that sit for a day or two to let any residual chlorine evaporate.
Drain the barrel and wipe it with another cloth or rag and if it's clean and doesn't smell at all it should be ok.
If the barrel smells of dead birds after this I would get a new one.
The last thing you want is to have mushroom culture that smell like dead animals.
Good Luck.

LMAO
I would make sure the insides are not all scratched up or deeply gouged (by beaks and such). Bacterium like to hide in the nooks and crannies.
