what is an easy edible strain to start with, and are there any good edible "teks"? Agar is neccesary?

oysters are pretty forgiving start with those. Agar is probably necessary to start with unless someone wants to send you a culture already on agar .In the shroomery that is very possible just ask

Oysters are the place to start.
You can grow them on straw, most of the others have to grow in wood.
If someone will hook you up with a culture you're golden.
I'm trying to clone what I bought in the supermarket using karo water, I've heard many have been succesful with this tek.

You probably have read the cheap oyster spores thread below this, if not it will be helpful.

good luck

sporeworks sells mycellium syringes, as long as you're capable of making grain spawn.

thisone if you dont use agar now then you should start. It seems lots of people try not to use it but if you are serious about doing anything, even with basic shit ie. cubes, I reckon you should begin with agar.
Yay to oysters they are good and forgiving.
Good luck.

Fungi Perfecti has a very good price ($16) for a 1 gallon block of sawdust oyster spawn.

Anyone know why they charge more for their grain spawn? I'm planning on multiplying the sawdust spawn the same way I would with G2G teks.

Why bother with spores?

felonius ... I would think the grain takes more preparation, as well as greater care to prevent contams. Another place that sells spawn is mushroompeople.com I wonder what a gallon of sawdust weighs? .. too much for me!
From what I've read, going g2g you would better much better off using culture or syringe.

My free oyster mycillia is growing. In a few days I will try it on popcorn. If successful, the 5, mins it took to clone will be well spent.

I know it will work if I can avoid the contams! Gotta let it thicken a little first. I'll post results when I have some.

Cool .. What kind of spawn did you order? How do you plan to use it?

I really dont know much about it, it just said "oyster spawn for homecultivation, comes with instructions and a picturial" the add also said there would be approx. 70 grams of myc in a box. The price is 10$.
Thats all i know, so im really looking forward to recieving the "box"
I will post some pictures on arrival.

I think the grain spawn is more expensive because grain is more expensive than sawdust. The grain spawn can be expanded more greatly than the sawdust spawn so ultimately you can end up with the mush more material for the spawn run if you buy grain spawn. Both require sterilization so I do not think that there is a big difference in the manner that you prepare them.

the straw would work? That's great news! so could a clone tissue be taken from a storebought mushroom, doused with H202 and then used to innoc. WBS? Or should it but put in a karo water jar with H202 and water.
Very interested in the agar and would start but not quite sure where to start, best place to get supplies and if it's neccesary. I think it will become a very valuble commodity once it's learned. Just need some help getting started. SO oysters it will be. Can anyone help guide the way a bit or at least offer a helping hand. Thanks for the massive flush of responses.
