nicking seeds
    #1950508 - 09/25/03 06:45 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

this nicking thing is new to me. i got some hbwr seeds. didnt realize you had to nick before soaking so theyve been in water for 24. i take it the germ eye is the little circle? so on the other side do i just need to get through the fuzzy husk and scratch it up or do i need to get all the way through the hard bit and expose the center?

thanks

When I read the title, I expected to see some cunning plan involving shop-lifting at the garden-centre.

What I did with HBWR; scrape the fuzz off and placed on some soaked cotton wool, they swell within a day and if you leave them in there you'll see the root emerge.

Plant about twice their depth down in ordinary seed compost, did the trick for me, I'll post a pic of the seedlings later.

Just take a knife and (at the smaller end) make a tiny nick (about 1mm square) and not very deep at all out of it. That's how scar my seeds and this always seems to work. Don't just randomly scratch it up but instead nick it at the (pointier?) end if you see what I mean by pointier end- most seeds have one. Good luck- I've heard that HBW is an easy plant to grow. Very rewarding I imagine!

Oh I didn't know you had to scrape the fuzz off of them- well you learn something new every day.

this is still pretty confusin to me. i couldnt cut into it with a knife so i just scraped the pointy bit against some concrete. hope it does the trick.

haha jackal when i went to buy some compost yesterday i did notice how thre was a gap in the barbed wire at the top of the fence next to the compost i wanted with no security cameras able to see it.
