Sorry to bump but I saw the rain too, and it's been very cold suddenly...should I think about going out this weekend, or is more rain needed (remember we've had insane dryness)...??

I'm gonna go hunitng this weekend, but I'm not really expecting much seeing as we've still not had much of a decent soaking (West Midlands), considering the severe lack of rain all summer. Has anybody found any Fly Agaric yet?

Intensive hunting today over meadows, lawns, woodland, bogs, and woodchip beds yielded JUST ONE species of mushroom, a very uninteresting Collybia, in the bog. At this time of year all these places are usually resplendent with shrooms of varied colour, shape, size, and the like, not to mention magic.
I am quite depressed.

I went today, didnt find a single mushroom either - the ground was far too dry. I think some serious rain is needed, more than just a days worth.

I was walking home from work yesterday when I spied what I thought was a liberty cap, poking up from behind a wooden post.

On closer inspection it was a tiny dandelion stalk.

I was so pissed off that I stamped the shit out of it.

Mr. Englander,

It is not nice to kill plants of beauty, especially one which cannot defend itself against someone who smashes it out of anger for not getting his way.

I sure would never want to go picking with you if that is a sign of your personality.

a dandelion grew in meadow field
and bowed its head from all concealed
so modest yet so comely

by chance a shephard-maid did pass
with step so light she trod the grass
so gay! so gay!
and all the while sang her song:
La la la, la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la.

Ach! Thought the dandelion:
But had I the power
to match the first in nature's bower
and not so homely -
then to gather she then might care
and lay me on her bosom fair
ah me! ah me!
if not for very long.

Yet, sad to say, but true indeed
the careless maiden paid no heed
and crushed the tender violet!

It sank to earth, and there did sigh:
I still am glad!
Though death be nigh -
'tis well! 'tis well!
for at her feet
I die.

Ah, tender dandelion
so modest yet so comely.

- Goethe (adapt. a very stoned pluteus)

I found some P semilanceata on the Derbyshire moors today !

I only managed to find about 30 or 40 and most were severely withered but was given a couple of nice big fresh specimens to clone by this girl who'd driven all the way from Nottingham to come picking !

If your reading this now Nikzi thanks babe, it was great meeting you  and I might see you next week !

I think it was dead anyway...

Besides, I kill hundreds of mushrooms every year!

However, I see your point and humbly accept that I was wrong.

A thorough search of my favourite spots in Shropshire last friday in (26th sept) revealed very little. I found 9 tiny liberty caps, after about 1 hour hunting. Normally I would find several hundred at this time and location. Still a lot more rain needed. I probably won't bother looking again until mid october.

However, I did manage to find 35 good condition fly agaric specimens, (there were more, but alot of them were quite skanky), so my hunt wasn't completely in vain.

A lot of immatures up there, which was comforting...
Wasn't expecting to find anything so I was pleasantly suprised, hope to find more next sunday....

I cant wait....

Think i'm gonna start looking this weekend too.
Remember hot summer should mean good mycelium growth which should equal better pickings when it rains...and it will rain that one thing you can always be sure of here right?
