Make Shift Closet
    #19503265 - 01/31/14 08:25 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys, I've got a huge problem! Wanting to start growing again but I live with some pretty dirty ass people. I have my own room, but it's filled with my stuff so I don't know if I have the best environment, sterile-wise, to prevent contams.

Leads me to the subject: is there a cheap, good way to make a makeshift closet? Or is there something else I can use to give me as much sterility as possible when I inoculate, transfer, and fruit?

If you know a link I should visit, do add. I looked around but couldn't seem to find anything truly helpful for my circumstances. Thanks in advance :pipesmoke:

When making transfers & such, a simple Still air box will work wonders.  Once the cakes or grains are fully colonized, they are pretty strong against contams so You can fruit them in a mono tub or SGFC.  As long as you use the SAB when inoculating or transferring you should be fine.

First make a still air box(sab) to help with sterile inoculation, transfer, etc.

With a monotub grow using damion5050's tek sterility is less of a problem.

You may benefit from a small indoor greenhouse using a small ultrasonic humidifier. You can clean the inside of the GH as often as you would like. Violet has awesome information on this topic.

Rent here is already excessive, so I'm not too sure I can afford living on my own just yet... not until I finish school and get a full-time job at least.

Pussyfart, the second pic looks like you arranged a couple of bins in an organizer. Wouldn't I still have to worry about making sure the room it's in is still clean, or does it not matter after you've already put them in tubs (that is save for the fruiting step when you have to keep them misted)?

Thanks all

They are stacked 5 high in a closet. No organizer.

Monotubs are set and forget, meaning there is no need for misting until after the first flush.

Spawning/fruiting is not a sterile process....at this point everything should be contam resistant.

Do some more reading on the monotub teks. You can spawn to a bulk sub right into the big tubs. When it's time to fruit just introduce fresh air and light. By the time you are ready to fruit the tub's, contams will be much less of an issue. So basically incubation right to the setup in the second pic PF posted.

Gotcha, it's been a while since I've done a monotub tek so I'm a bit hazy on the steps. For some reason I thought I kept getting trich at the fruiting step, but it's more likely that it happened when transferring the jars to the tub.

So will the SAB allow for better sterility when transferring, or is this where the indoor greenhouse comes into play? Most contams in my previous trials came from the transfer to the monotub, and even then I had better control of cleanliness since I lived alone, so that's why I'm seeing if having it in my room will be a smart idea or not.

Btw, I used to do WBS, just wondering if this is still the best way to go (I never had problems except for when I kept the heat too high). But thanks again you guys.

Your contamination is most likely not your transfer from jar to tub, as this step can be done outside as others have stated on the forum. During the transfer the mycelium is pretty developed and will grow somewhat rapidly, so it's more likely your jars were contaminated from the start. When you transferred the contaminated jars to the tub the conditions were proper for the contamination to start developing. Inoculating your jars in a sterilized SAB should really help keep the jars free of contamination.

I'm not too sure that's true. Monotubs typically have to be really clean and coco coir+fairly stable acidity is used to reduce likelihood of contams from being introduced when transferring. Like Pussyfart mentioned, once the network has taken over the substrate and fruiting occurs, contams typically aren't such a problem. Trich happened to be my biggest nemesis and almost always occurred when I failed to transfer under the most sterile conditions. My jars were always pure white tho  :pipesmoke:

Just noticed this, answers my previous question about using the SAB for transfer. Thanks Danny!
