Thanks for all the help you useless bitches! I looked into tums tablets and they are almost 100% calcium carbonate, so I'm probably just going to use that if I don't hear from anyone soon. Any opinions would be helpful though.

fyi bleach is basic it won't hurt your substrate unless you used a whole lot of it. If you really wanted to get rid of it add some h2o2 (hydrogen peroxide) but not absolutely needed

Oh Shit! It is a base! WTF? Why is everybody talking about balancing the ph with hydrated lime then? That's crazy!
5 shrooms for catching my error, thanks.

it's not a 'base'. It's an oxidizer.
It has some alkaline properties but not like lime that releases OH- ions.
Bleach is NaOCl, decomposes into 2 NaCl + O2 (kinda like H2O2 but more stable). Decomposition is accelerated by heat.
So I guess if you pasteurized the straw, there should not be too much bleach left. Only table salt.

bleach is basic only because sodium hydroxide is added to keep a certain pH to prevent the NaOCl from decomposing.
