They don't always bruise. This is no indication of potency whatsoever either.

No bruising means little or no psilocin content. But they could still have a lot of psilocybin and be plenty active! Look at some other species like Psilocybe semilanceata or Panaeolus subbalteatus, they have no psilocin, so they don't bruise at all, but they have significant concentrations of psilocybin.

Exactly what I've been saying for years. Listen to people who know wtf they're talking about or listen to noobs who make post after post talking about that with which they have no clue.
There is some evidence it's a reaction with the psilocin, since species with higher psilocin content tend to bruise blue more than others, but nobody I know of has done a proper analysis to figure it out for sure. There's plenty of non-active species which also bruise blue.
Paul correctly says the blue bruising is one and only one facet of making a proper determination of species, not an indicator of potency. RR

That's due to different chemical reactions, different colour and nature of the bruising than the (suspected) psilocin oxidation. It occurs only in the Boletaceae family, no other gilled mushrooms bruise blue. Some light green discoloration is sometimes noted in Flammulina and Lepiota species, but that is very different than in Psilocybe sp. Bluing reactions in the Boletaceae have been researched a lot more than in psychoactive mushrooms unfortunately.
