home brew store, or online at a home brew store, or maybe a pet shop, or crush up some drywal.

not really, Get an old coffee grinder that you don't mind crushing rocks in. Or hammer it in a bag.

The absolute best place to buy gypsum is a hardware store. They have 50 pound bags for 7 dollars. Home brew stores are also an option but they cost 3 dollars per pound at the one I went to yesterday.

True that, a home brew store is a great place for a lot of mycology supplies though. They've got loops and petri's and slants as well as some ph adjusting tools which may be useful for casing layers. It's worth checking out, but you are gonna be paying way too much for gypsum there.

Wasn't sure on the specific amount per brick as well. I might have read somewhere that 1qt was recommended. Any advice on procuring pelleted gypsum without buying a 40lb bag?
A handful of gypsum per brick of coir is fine.
If you can get powder gypsum, it's better. The pellet gypsum dissolves in water so when you hydrate the coir, they'll break up too. Just pony up for a 40 pound bag and have it on hand. RR

I know that nitrogen is speculated to increase potency due to all alkaloids containing two nitrogen atoms. Is there any other addition that cubes require or perform better with?
Anyone can have a speculation just like something else we all have. There is no basis in fact that adding anything to a substrate will increase potency. None.
You can increase yields with proper substrate, but forget about the NPK thing totally when dealing with organisms such as fungi and mammals. RR
How would you define "proper substrate"? These varieties perform well on dung and I'm assuming that adding something such as chicken poo to coir would have a desirable effect, with nitrogen as a bonus for sake of curiosity.

Well I pasteurize sterilized prepped the coir with boiling water in a bag tied off for 4 hours before adding the spawn.

I was led to believe that heating to high temperatures under high pressure was sterilization and leaving something to sit in freshly boiled water and allowed to slowly cool in a sealed container was pasteurization. I use my chosen method because it's simple, not hot enough to kill off essential organisms and no further precautions are required because coir doesn't attract much microbial attention anyway, this is just a minor safe guard. Plus boiling water is far better to use on these really tightly compressed bricks of coir than cold water to get them to expand properly, with the added benefit of pasteurization, or so I believed.

bodhisatta said: yes, 1) just expanding the coir with water and using it is worst and gives shit performance
2) Expanding the coir with boiling water in a bucket is neither sterilization or pasteurization but it's slightly better.
3) Sterilizing the coir is slightly better than the bucket tek(2)
4) properly pasteurizing is best, IE 140-160F for an hour.
coir is very very forgiving, It's extremely hard to fuck it up and if you see a contam before the first flush it isn't your coir it's your spawn.
And I've just read this post, so thanks for clearing that up. So is it just necessary when pasteurizing something to put it in a large pot and keep at those temperatures for an hour?

to call it pasteurization as far as mycology is concerned yes. There's good proper pasteurization teks out there if you're interested they should be easy to find or PM me an I can link you

Thanks, at least I'm better informed now. I don't think there's much worry using the boiling water in a bucket (or bag in my case) method but if I do decide to add chicken poo or other additives I'd rather be confident that I'm doing it right.

yep if it's just coir and verm you can bucket it, though I wouldn't recommend it just because it's a bad habbit if you do want to add something else or do anything other than coir + verm. May as well develop the skill now rather than avoid it.

Those few words make everything alright.
I guess I was just lucky stumbling across coir early on in my research. It's a nice, easy and resistant substrate which holds moisture well and is easily maintained. Perfect.
I won't be supplementing coir any time soon, just additives, and few.
One thing I am learning about growing cubes is it's very easy to over think it. They actually need very little, keep the conditions right and you'll do well. The rest is experimentation, curiosity and possible bonus results. I mean, if I started off on this grow I'm not too worried about future attempts, especially using isolates.
Thanks for you advice guys. It's better to have things straight in my head, 100%, instead of being a little unsure about something
