Easy way to cut tyvek GE filter disks?
    #19497776 - 01/30/14 05:48 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Not sure if this would work but I'm thinking of trying it out. Basically take a section of some tyvek coverall material and fold it repeatedly like say 20 pieces thick or maybe even more. Lay this on a block of wood and then screw another block of wood to it pinching the material tightly hopefully enough to keep it in place then just run a one inch hole saw bit through it and pop them out and separate. Thoughts , ideas, methods you've used successfully or not.

Would think the hole saw would tear up the tyvek.  Just take a few mins with a razor or scissors .

Yeah I might be over thinking it but it is a very time consuming tedious task and would be nice to have plenty on hand. How often do you change your disks out? If I cut them square yeah the razor blade might not be to bad but you still couldn't cut multiple layers very well.

why 1"? for monotub GE holes? how many tubs are you going to make to need a jig for cutting tyvek? haha you could buy a paper trimmer, fold a pant leg of a tyvek suit a bunch of times, hold them in line and chop some squares out

this is the paper trimmer im talking about:

Mostly for grain jars 1 inch is a little big for a 1/4 inch hole but thats what I got handy and I figured the edges would get chewed up some.. yeah the paper cutter crossed my mind a bit after I posted it.. I do think it would work. I've heard some people say to switch them after every 2 runs but I would think as long as they aren't deteriorating they'd be okay for longer.

ooo cool I gotcha now, just enough to cover the GE hole in a lid  I personally dont like to reuse the tyvek because it is a filter that has kept contaminants out and trapped particles from getting in. Tyvek is plentiful, especially if you have a painters suit and are only using a 1 inch circle or square, you can easily take an hour with scissors, and make 200+ inch squares. IMO! Good luck man!

I think you might be overthinking it. Scissors are quick and easy. That's all I use. But I take mine off an eight foot roll of Tyvek building wrap. Hole saw would leave it jagged and they suck trying use one without the center guide bit, which obviously you wouldn't want a hole through the center of your filter.

Invest in some synthetic filter disc. I get mine in 90mm size from mad season and trace a quarter to cut out your filter for a 3/8" GE hole. I get 8 filters from one 90mm disc and they last a long time tyvek needs replaced everytime i believe. they are only 99 cents a piece just gotta spend atleast $5 on your order and couple bucks for shipping.

Another question this may be more of a preference thing but I seen some people put 2 disks one on each side of the lid. Is that more less overkill or is it something that should be done?

1 GE port is tons. You want at least 1 RTV self healing injection port as well, unless your noccing up with g2g or agar wedge. If you're doing just 1 injection port then you'll have a GE port and an injection port on across from each other. Most recommend a 1/4" hole for the GE.

Yeah thats what I'm working on got all my self healers done on the ones that need them. What I was referring to is one GE port but with filters on both sides of the hole.

i've used only postal tyvek (yes, i know its "unlawful" please do not reply saying that).  i've done one layer on top of lid, then one layer on top and on bottom, then two layers on top.  can't say I've seen a difference (maybe contam wise, but it was equal across the board, suggesting g2g was the problem).  i don't cut them to fit tho., or make innoc ports.  just a square.  so it would go from bottom to top:
glass jar
metal circular lid (one 1/4" hole or two 1/8" holes)
postal tyvek
lid ring screwed down on top securing tyvek.

they look like this in the end:

i use SFD's now, but with tyvek i replaced it each jar, which is why i didn't like doing more than a cutout that was easy to throw out after 100%.  i didn't want to modify a lid just for one time use...maybe with tyvek suits u can, i have seen it done and recommended, just never trusted it like that (not saying u shouldn't either, it was just me)

if i use an LC for them (which i do sometimes, and as u can see, at least one of those jars is according to label, probably the others too from same batch, but its an old pic so i can't recall) i just manipulate lid like i would for agar.  i.e. unscrew, lift lid lightly, like 1/2" and squirt the LC in after flaming, all in an SAB.  no need for additional modification unless u have no SAB, at least IME.

yea i just added that cause inevitable someone chimes in with that federal offense thing, which i guess is important to note, but if it were not for tyvek i would still be on BRF jars.  guess i could go with poly tho...?
i dunno, i only use tyvek now when I'm out of SFD.  if ur in the hobby long term, spring for the SFD's they are well worth it, and only expensive if u use the entire disc, instead of cutting each one into 6 smaller ones.
