Cakes getting blue in jar. Need advice.
    #19497641 - 01/30/14 05:17 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Hey. One of my cakes is fully colonized and is in it's consolidation phase but a bunch of spots that were white are starting to turn blue.

Then there's my other cake which is only about halfway done and the colonized portion is turning blue.

it's been 38 days since inoculation in a desert climate. I'm hoping it's thirsty or this is normal.

Should I just birth and dunk now since the majority of it had been colonized for about a week now?

And the other cake, since it's halfway, maybe birth it, brush off the uncolonized portion and dunk it as well?

Or maybe contamination? God I hope not.

Here's an example.

Just faint blue-ing.

Doesn't look contaminated to me. 38 days seems like a long time, though. I've seen the faint bluing thing once or twice--I don't know what makes it happen--but it's never caused a problem. I'd just continue to let it colonize.

I think if it's a contaminant it would have taken over the jar long ago. It's just trying really hard to take over the last of the substrate with the moisture it has.

Out of curiosity on the long colonization time -- did you noc the jars with spores that could be only somewhat hydrated? I see 'wait 24hrs', but I wait at least a week now. Seems to make a difference.

38 days is a long time. That jar looks colonized 125%.
Its likely turning blue because its used the original water and is drying out.
Birth, dunk n roll.

I used a syringe from a trusted vendor, about 4-5 CC's throughout 4 jars. The last jar only grew from one point I wasn't very good with the plunger my first time.

Yea, but it is AA+ which I hear is a slow grower. It looks really good from that side, but that was the only side that grew, the other 3 sides were no good. Here check it out.

(That green on the bottom is a glare no worries) As you can see only halfway done

Now my other jar had only a spot the size of jolly rancher to colonize the past week. And it finished about 48 hours ago.

A bunch of white dots have started to turn blue on this, but not the cake itself.

I also have two other cakes, one at about 45% and the other at about 80% but they look pretty boring and normal.

I followed evilmusrooms tek to a tee, except I put micropore over the innoc ports to prevent pests from entering like ants. Oh and I used a PC instead of a steam pot.
