On my way home...
    #1945624 - 09/23/03 06:40 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

I like to hunt in peoples yards..
Here is today's bounty!!

Ganoderma lucidium, Reishi, Varnish Conk, Ling Chih

Coprinus comatus, Shaggy Mane

These I am not 100% sure on..

I am using Mushrooms Demystified, which leads me to this identification. It is not in any of my other field guides though..

Boletus rubinellus?

I used Autobahn for this one..

Boletus subtomentosus, Yellow-Cracked Bolete?

Any help is appreciated.

Nice stuff you got there.

On your boletes, the first ones look like a Suillus to me at first glance. Maybe Suillus americanus? We need a spore print to help make sure we get that one into the right genus. Was the cap sticky or slimy when they were fresh (you can try wetting one with a drop or two of water to see if it gets sticky or slimy)? When you bruise the tubes, what color (if any) do they turn?

On the second one, if you scratch the tube surface, does it bruise bluish within 30 seconds (or at all)? And is the stalk reticulate near the top (has netlike ridges on the surface)? What kind of trees were growing nearby?

Happy mushrooming!

On second pic, i believe the first mushroom is Coprinus calyptratus, the rest are comatus.

They have a taste that's very different from the regular store button mushrooms. Make sure you use only the ones whose gills are still completely white. They do really good breaded and fried, and they're outstanding in omelets.

Okay back from yet another day...

I have some info for you toxicman.

On the Boletus. They were growing right at the base of a hardwood, sorry dont know my trees to well yet..
Spore print olive.
Here is an image of the bruising, it took an hour or so.

On the Suillus, the cap is sticky when wet. The spore print is light-medium brown. I also noticed tiny red flecks all over the cap and stem.

Here are the prints from the above unidentified mushrooms.

The left one is the Boletus (olive) and the right is the Suillus (light to medium brown).

Now, here are today's finds.

I believe this is Amanita muscaria var. alba?

For Toxic man VV

Coprinus comatus, Shaggy Mane
Are these easy to cultivate?

I thought these might be some kind of Agaricus?
I have no idea where to start with these. (Besides a spore print, which is in progress.)

That's OK. Hardwood vs. pine is good enough most of the time, and I'm pretty bad at botany, too. Is the stalk (especially at the top) reticulate?

I think those Suillus probably are Suillus americanus, based on the overall color and the glandular dots you've described on the stem. Try looking at those dots with a magnifier - they're really interesting looking. Do any of them have any bits of whitish veil at the edge of the cap? That's another common feature of S. americanus.

That next one is certainly Amanita muscaria. I'm not sure if it's variety alba or another variety that's faded in the sun.

I've heard that Shaggy Manes can be cultivated (Stamets mentions it). They aren't cultivated commercially because you can't get them to the store before they turn into inky goo. If somebody comes up with a sterile (not deliquescing) strain, I predict that they will become wealthy.

That last mushroom is *not* an Agaricus, it's an Amanita! Your over-the-top-of-the-cap photo shows the tiny warts really well. Would you cut it in half vertically and scrape the inside to bruise it, then let us know about any bruising reaction? Also, there is a good possibility that it may have a distinctive odor, so see if you can detect one, and let us know.

The features that tell me that it's an Amanita are:
Free, white gills (and probably a white spore print)
Bulbous base (and a membranous, saccate volva present, if you look closely)
Warts on cap

The ring will be important for identification, but not all Amanitas have a ring.

Excellent finds, and great photos!

Happy mushrooming!

It bruises light brown, there is no smell, not even a mushroomy one??

Thanks for all your help, it really means (and helps) a lot!!

If you cut the bolete in half vertically and scrape the inside, does some of the flesh bruise blue within 30 seconds? Is more than half of the stem reticulate, or is it just at the top?

The Amanita seems to want to key out as Amanita brunnescens, although the base of the stem is not as bulbous as I would expect for that species. It should also have clefts in the side of it and the mushroom should smell of raw potatoes.

It appears to fall into section Phalloidae, which is the section of Amanita that includes the deadly species. To verify that it would be best to verify that the spores are amyloid. Did you get a spore print of it? If so, do you have some Tincture of Iodine (you can get it at the grocery store in the first aid section)? Amyloid spores will turn blue to purplish in Iodine (like potato does), although it's tougher to see without a microscope. If you can't (or don't want to) do all that I can understand.

A very interesting specimen.

Happy mushrooming!
