Newbie paralysis by analysis
    #19496469 - 01/30/14 01:39 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Been lurking more than a year.  Started off expecting to buy some substrate from someplace, spores from someplace else and do it that way.  Pf tek seemed easy so I learned and read, and read some more, and read some more.  I feel I have a good handle on the first part of the process.

Then I started reading the fc threads and write ups and I feel like a tyro all over again.  Some guys doing it on the cheap and getting great results, others using these incredibly complex builds that seem to be even more effective (depending on the goal).

I'm ready to shop for ingredients and hardware.  I think.  But I like to restate things and have ny statements confirmed or updated by experts.

For the prep and inoculation I feel like I am ready to go.  I'm a little fuzzy still on precisely when the cakes go from.their starting jar or cup to.the fc.

For the fc, it seems to me like building a terrarium right?  A snake or lizard habitat?  At least some of the principles are shared right?  Air needs to bebe filtered though.  Warm, humid, constant values for both.  Seems like there is some disagreement about light in the fc though.

So, could someone tell me whether I am way off base or not?  I'm hoping to buy all the supplies this weekend.  Id like to have my fc all done before I make cakes obviously.

I'm planning on a small fc, like a 20 gallon tank maybe.

Thanks for all the info this site has already provided for me.

The cakes come out of the jars when they reach 100% colonization, give or take a little time to "Consolidate". They get taken out, dunked in water overnight, then rolled in vermiculite. At that point they go to your FC. The general favorite for this is a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber, or SGFC. It's a plastic tote with dozens of small holes drilled into it, and lined with a few inches of perlite to keep the moisture levels up. Guides to both steps are readily available on the site.

no tanks just use a tote it's much easier, you wanna drill 1/4 inch holes spaced 2 inches apart in a grid pattern on all six sides and set your fc on some jars so air can pass through from underneathe, no lights in the fc thats a fire hazzard.
just post your process including supplies and we will help along the way to keep you in a strait line

Excellent.  That'll save me a lot of money.  My house tends to be chilly, I saw some guys used heating pads under the fc to keep it warm, ill have to look again at the sgfc links.

I was half hoping you guys would say use a clear plastic tote.  I wanted to ensure success and it seemed like the terrarium was the most guaranteed.

The SGFC should be clear plastic. You'll let the mycelium get natural light from the ambient light in the room.
