So.. pasteurization vs sterilization

I don't understand why pasteurization is, or rather how it could be, better than sterilization for the preparation of casings. I read one post in specific that noted that sterilization of manure would likely result in contamination... how is that possible..??

The beneficial bacteria that survives pasteurization fends off contamination by mold etc. and casings are exposed to unsterile conditions when fruiting, if you sterilize your casings mold spores fall on them, germinate and then start growing with nothing to stop them.

The pasteurization kills off the mold spores in your sub, but leaves beneficial micro-organisms. These micro-organisms help to give your sub some immunity against contams. If you sterilize it that would kill the the beneficial organisms

Ah, I see. Guess I missed that memo x.x Thanks though! I'll have to remember that for the next time, should come in handy

another note to take is we call them bulk subs not casings

OP, if you were talking about bulk subs the reasoning is still the same, although you are exposing the substrate to unsterile conditions when you spawn to bulk, covering it up again then waiting for the mycelium to colonize completely, inducing fruiting after 100% colonization. I grow a lot of stuff that needs actual casing so I didn't catch your mistake.

i feel bad for even saying this because the advise is sound and i 100% agree.....but i just spawned my shit to sterilized coir and cased with more sterilized coir but poo or straw you would never get away with

Have you ever tried no past/sterilization of coir, but only add normal temp water? I've seen several posts a couple years back of people claiming to have done so, but the ones I can find is posters saying FU I do it and then going all bananas. I don't know whether to believe them or not, but it seems plausible with coir. albeit not preferable.

it is plausible but the reason we pasturize/sterilize is to "cook" the coir for the myc to digest better

Yeah I know, this was more a thought after your "I sterilized my sub" thread where you said the myc rips thru the sub like it owes money.
I've always thought pasteurization was the best way to "cook" this meal, but as your sterilized sub was ripped thru, how much of a difference would it make not to past or sterilize at all. Could/would it still rip thru it..
I know this has been discussed, searched, done/tried, but I've never seen a trustworthy member try to pull it off.
And yes this is coir/verm only. dont just water your poo and spawn to it

Coir seems to be just naturally contaminant resistant so yeah, you can ignore a lot of precautions and do half assed shit, which is why so many newbs can do a mono and get decent results. Anything else though, and you start to see what happens when your pasteurization technique is sub-par.
